Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are part of the non-sporting group of dogs, known for their stocky and compact build, large bat-like ears and easy-going nature. French Bulldogs are recognized by the American Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club as a legitimate breed and make great companion pets. They are known for being quite entertaining and affectionate, although having a reputation for being stubborn. Although French Bulldogs are low maintenance in terms of grooming and exercise, they do require more attention than some breeds due to their lively personalities and social needs.
Management of allergies with French Bulldogs is best handled through prevention. Prior to adoption, research the breed's health conditions to ensure it is a good fit. Limiting exposure to allergens is important--ensure that your house is often cleaned to minimize dust and dander and discard items that may hold allergens, such as carpets, curtains, and furniture. Allergy-proof bedding is a good option; wash it regularly to ward off allergens. If possible, bathing the dog weekly can help to limit the severity of allergies.
French Bulldogs should not be fed human foods, as these can be unsafe for them due to their smaller size and sensitive digestion. Similarly, foods with high levels of fat, or that are highly processed should be avoided. In general, a good child-safe commercial dog food, free from artificial additives, is recommended. Avoid overfeeding your French Bulldog as they are prone to obesity, and to help prevent them from eating too much, it is recommended to break their meals into two or more servings per day.
French Bulldogs have some special requirements that should be considered for proper care. They are considered a “brachycephalic” breed, meaning their skulls are naturally short and wide, which can make breathing difficult and vulnerable to health issues. As a result, they should be kept in temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, as getting too hot could cause overheating or heat stroke. A French Bulldog should not be allowed to overexert itself with exercise, as it can easily work up a lather and become ill.
French Bulldogs come in a range of sizes depending on their lineage. Generally, the breeds typically range from 11-13 inches tall and weigh between 15-28 pounds. French Bulldogs are smaller than standard Bulldog breeds but are also sturdier in stature with a broad chest and stout little legs. Like all Bulldogs, these breeds have a strong, muscular build with short, smooth coats and a short, pushed in face. Some breeders also specialize in mini French Bulldogs, which typically stay small in size throughout their adult life.
French Bulldogs typically do not require vigorous exercise. They are content with a couple of short walks a day, a few games of fetch, or some supervised playtime in the yard. For a healthy and happy pup, French Bulldogs need about 30 minutes of activity per day, including a combination of both mental and physical stimulation. This can include going for a brisk walk, playing tug-o-war, having a play session with another pup, or something as simple as running around the yard in circles.
French Bulldogs are known for their friendly and alert personality, so they make a great companion for children. These loyal pooches form strong bonds with their families and are very protective of them. As long as the proper guidelines are in place and the kids are taught how to properly interact with the pup, French Bulldogs and kids can have a great relationship. With consistent guidance, Frenchies can learn to understand boundaries, welcome affection from kids, and even become an active and playful part of the family.
Training a French Bulldog can be a rewarding experience. Generally speaking, they are highly intelligent and take well to consistent, positive reinforcement. They make excellent companions and respond well to positive reinforcement, treats, and praise. However, while they may learn basic commands more quickly than other breeds, their independent nature and stubbornness can make more advanced or complex training more difficult. To ensure success, it's important to provide structure, while also creating a positive, interactive learning environment. Time and dedication are key to the training process and it's important to remember to keep sessions short and enjoyable for the best results.
