Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are an incredibly adorable breed of dog, small yet very active with a stout and muscular build. They have large, erect ears and a distinctive "bat face" with a flat-top skull and short, snub muzzle. Some fun facts about French Bulldogs include that they adapt to hot or cold temperatures quite well, they were originally created in England to be smaller versions of Bulldogs, and they love to cuddle and show affection. In fact, French Bulldogs are often called "Clowns in the Cloak of a Canter", due to their playful, clown-like behavior.
French Bulldogs have short and smooth coats that come in a variety of colors and patterns. Solid colors can include; fawn, brindle, white, and cream. Brindle and fawn coats are more common. Patterns may be found in the coloring, and may include; black, white, tan, and grey. These smooth coats shed very little hair, and require minimal brushing and cleaning to maintain its luster. Their coats are typically thick, and should be able to protect them from most weather changes.
French Bulldogs do have special dietary needs because they are a brachycephalic breed with abnormal facial bone structure, which can lead to difficulty in breathing and lower respiratory tract issues. While general health benefits from a balanced and nutritious diet, this breed should limit their intake of nutrients, as they are prone to weight gain and subsequent issues such as joint pain, breathing problems, and poor cardiovascular health. In regards to nutrition, French Bulldogs do best on high quality, hypoallergenic food that are low in fat and high in protein.
Before bringing your French Bulldog home, it's important to do some initial preparations. Start by puppy-proofing your house. Place cord protectors over any cords, keep medications out of reach, and make sure you don't have any choking hazards or other dangerous items laying around. Similarly, make sure the area in your house where your pup will be spending time is comfortable and familiar. Have plenty of food, water bowls, toys, and blankets available. You should also consider crate training and setting up specific times for outside potty breaks so your pup has some structure while learning boundaries.
French Bulldogs are often considered to be small dogs. Generally this breed is considered to be a small-medium sized dog, with adult male French Bulldogs usually weighing up to 28 lbs and standing up to 12-16 inches tall. This relatively small size makes them a great option for people living in smaller homes. Although the appearance of a French Bulldog is that of a larger dog, they are actually quite small in size. French Bulldogs also tend to be low energy, making them great for calm households. Their playful and friendly demeanor also make them perfect for playtime with children and other pets.
French Bulldogs are a breed that requires an average amount of exercise compared to other breeds, exercising limits depending on the individual dog's age and health. An adult French Bulldog should get at least thirty minutes of activity per day. A quality daily walk dedicated to stretching their legs and exploring the neighborhood is beneficial. If possible, allow your Frenchie to have some running and playing time in a safe and secure area. It is also important to provide mental stimulation by engaging in interactive playtime such as hide and seek and training/teaching them commands.
French Bulldogs are one of the most popular dog breeds for families, and for good reason! Some of the great features that make this breed so great for families are their small size, low exercise requirements, and lovable personalities. They are resilient and generally don't require a lot of maintenance in terms of daily exercise or grooming. As these cuddly canines love spending time with their human families, French Bulldogs can bring hours of fun and companionship into the home. They are smart dogs and can often be trained quickly and easily to learn tricks and commands.
Training a French Bulldog should take several minutes per day. Primarily, repetition and consistency is key to training success, so it's important to incorporate time into your daily schedule to commit to basic commands and other behaviors. Depending on how advanced you want to go with your training and the age of your French Bulldog, anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes per day is acceptable for basic training. However, if you are looking to work on more refined skills or advanced tricks, you may need to spend up to an hour per day in consistent sessions with your pup.
