Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs, or "Frenchie's" as they are often affectionately referred to, are a member of the Brachycephalic dog breed, which includes breeds such as Pugs and Boston Terriers. This breed is known for its short noses, compact bodies, and big, pointed ears. As a breed, French Bulldogs are a mix of Bulldog and Terrier origins which makes them a very funny and entertaining breed. They typically have short coats that come in a variety of colors and patterns, and these dogs typically live shorter lives than their larger counterparts.
French Bulldogs are not hypoallergenic. They do not possess any special traits that would make them better for allergy sufferers than any other breed. French Bulldogs, like other breeds, do produce dander and shed fur which could trigger allergic reactions for some individuals. Those with allergies should still get tested for any potential reactions before owning this breed of dog. A better option for the allergy sufferer would be a breed that requires less grooming such as a poodle, as this will be better for keeping dander and shedding to a minimum.
French Bulldogs should not be fed foods that are high in fat, such as large amounts of red meat or processed human food. Additionally, foods that contain chemical additives, artificial colors, preservatives, sugar, or salt should be avoided. Rawhide chews, which are produced from the stomach or intestines of cows, should also not be fed to French Bulldogs, as they can splinter and cause gastrointestinal issues. Additionally, French Bulldogs should not be fed toxic foods, such as grapes, raisins, chocolate, or products containing xylitol.
Before getting a French Bulldog, there are a few things you should consider purchasing to help your pup thrive in their new home. A comfortable bed is important as French Bulldogs enjoy their sleep. Some toys are also essential for playtime and to keep them occupied. A comfy collar and leash are also necessary to take your pup on walks and visits to the vet. Proper food and water bowls are great for serving meals and snacks. Grooming supplies such as a brush, shampoo, and nail clippers are also essential for your Bulldog's hygiene.
French Bulldogs come in a broad range of sizes, from teacup-sized dogs weighing under 10 pounds to larger dogs weighing up to 28 pounds or more. Although smaller dogs are more popular and frequently shown, breeders strive for the medium-sized Frenchies, which weigh in at 14 to 28 pounds. No matter the size, all French Bulldogs share the same playful and gentle personality. They are strong, lively, and affectionate, natural clowns who bring great joy to their owners.
French Bulldogs are generally fairly active and need regular exercise to stay healthy. However, the amount of exercise required for French Bulldogs can vary depending on the individual pet some may need more, and some may need less. In general, it is recommended to give French Bulldogs 45 minutes to an hour of activity each day, including going on walks, playing in the yard, and engaging in other forms of exercise. Incorporating mental stimulation, such as games and interactive training, can help ensure that all of your pet's needs are met.
French Bulldogs are an excellent companion for children due to their friendly, affectionate and cheerful personalities. Frenchies are gentle with kids, making them a great family pet. As Frenchies love to spend time with their families, they adore getting belly rubs and cuddle time with the littles. They have moderate energy levels, making them perfect for kids who like to play and run. Highly reliable and intelligent, Frenchies are also easy to train and understand boundaries. In addition to their manageable size, they are a loyal and entertaining breed that your children will adore.
Training a French Bulldog should be an enjoyable experience for you and your pup. To begin, it's important to understand that Frenchies are quite intelligent, but they do need to learn how to properly interact and be behaved when in public. It's best to start by teaching your pup basic commands, such as sit, stay and come when called. Start with short training sessions and plenty of praise when they accomplish something correctly. Training these dogs can be hard, as they are not the biggest fan of consistency, but it can help to motivate them to pay attention when they see food as a reward.
