Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs, or 'Français Boules Chien', are incredibly popular companion animals around the world! They are known to be affectionate, loyal, and, of course, very cute. Here are some fun facts about French Bulldogs: They originated in France during the 19th century, when Bulldogs were bred with local ratters. French bulldogs are naturally low energy, which makes them ideal for small spaces and apartments. Frenchies have an endearing facial expression due to the fact that their tongues sometimes stick out of their mouths.
The French Bulldog has a unique coat that is often described as soft and glossy. Its coat is short in length and features straight and fine hair that can be brindle, solid white, fawn, cream, or a combination of these colors. Generally, the French Bulldog has an even-colored coat with minimal shedding, making them easy to maintain. On its face, this breed has a mask-like dark covering of fur, and its muzzle is often gray or black. Its smooth coat just needs to be occasionally brushed to look its best.
French Bulldogs have unique dietary needs and should not be fed human food, as it is usually too high in fat and can be difficult for them to digest. Additionally, certain foods can cause Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) and pancreatitis in French Bulldogs, both of which can be dangerous and life-threatening for little Frenchies. Foods to avoid include onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, avocado, sugar, chocolate, and macadamia nuts. Any treats should be given sparingly and be of a quality appropriate for a French Bulldog.
Before welcoming a new French Bulldog into your home, there are some important preparations you should make. Begin by investigating the laws and regulations in your area regarding pet ownership. Check to make sure having a dog is allowed under your contract, if you are living in a rental property. Additionally, you should establish a safe space in your house for the pup, with a place to sleep, a spot to play, and areas to rest away from the hustle and bustle. Stock up on pet supplies like food, treats, and toys, and set up a convenient system for providing them.
French Bulldogs come in a variety of sizes, ranging from 11 16 inches tall at the shoulder and typically weighing about 20-28 pounds. The smallest variety of French Bulldog, the “teacup” French Bulldog as they are sometimes referred to, are usually between 11-13 inches tall at the shoulder. The standard French Bulldog usually ranges from 14-16 inches. Generally, the smaller a French Bulldog is, the higher its price tag.
French Bulldogs, also known as Frenchies, typically love to swim and make great swimmers! Most Frenchies enjoy that feeling of being and staying cool when the weather is hot, and the water provides a great way to do just that. It's important to introduce swimming to them at an early age, as the more they get accustomed to it the more they come to love it and even look forward to their regular swims. You'll want to make sure the water is neither too cold nor too hot, and it's only necessary to swim for short, controlled periods of time.
French Bulldogs are a popular breed that can be great companions for first-time pet owners. They are generally low-maintenance and even-tempered, which makes them an ideal choice for those wanting a pet that is easy to care for and loves affection. French Bulldogs require minimal grooming, but they do need to be watched closely in hot temperatures, as they can become overheated easily. Additionally, they typically require minimal exercise, which means they are suitable for even the busiest of households, or those with limited space to exercise an animal.
Training your French Bulldog requires a consistent and patient approach. Start by teaching basic commands such as 'sit', 'down', and 'come' and reward your pup with a favorite treat or praise when they do the desired behavior. As they become familiar with the commands, you can move on to more complex commands such as 'stay' and 'leave it'. Additionally, crate training can help with house-training and make them more comfortable when left alone. Socializing your pup is also very important introducing them to different people, animals, and situations are key to helping them become well-rounded.
