Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs, sometimes called “Frenchie’s”, are a small breed of domestic canine originating from France. They are bred to have wide eyes and a short snout which gives them a unique and distinct appearance. Fun facts about French Bulldogs include that they are particularly hardy despite their small size, as they make excellent watchdogs.
French Bulldogs have a short and smooth coat, which is almost always brindle, fawn, or a combination. While they may appear to have a tough and resilient personality, the short coat requires extensive care. The coat is dense and low-shedding, which is ideal for owners who suffer from allergies. The high-set ears, dark eyes, and bat-like ears are often described as "cute". In addition, the short coat requires frequent bathing, along with regular in-depth brushing and professional grooming if possible. Some owners suggest 2-3 baths per month.
French Bulldogs should not be fed food that is too high in fat, as this could lead to health complications like obesity. As a rule, French Bulldogs should not be given table scraps either. This breed is also sensitive to dairy products, so it's best to stick to food formulated specifically for a French Bulldog. Additionally, it's important to limit consumption of bones, as these can cause choking or intestinal blockage. Although French Bulldogs have a high energy level, excessive carbohydrates should also be avoided.
Preparing for a new French Bulldog starts with setting up a suitable environment for your pup. Make sure he has a place of his own, such as a kennel or "crate", with blankets, toys or chew toys, and maybe a cozy bed. Plan to do some research on proper nutrition and feeding schedules that best fit the needs of your breed. Look for food and treats that are high in protein and low in sugar, and provide your pup with fresh water every day. Additionally, consider enrolling in a basic obedience class for your new pet.
French Bulldogs are certainly considered small dogs, typically standing at 12-16 inches tall and weighing no more than 28 pounds. Generally good-natured and playful, their small size makes them a popular choice for smaller households. Despite their size, they are a hearty breed, and with proper care and exercise, are fairly low maintenance. Additionally, due to their miniature size, they can often accompany their owners while traveling, making them ideal companions.
French Bulldogs may not be known for their amphibious ability, but the truth is that they don't mind taking a dip in the pool. While swimming may not be their favorite activity they usually much prefer to lounge on the side of the pool and take in the sun it can still be a fun and safe pastime with a little preparation. Bathing your French Bulldog prior to swimming in order to rinse off any dirt or debris, and providing them with a buoyant life jacket to keep them afloat, can ensure a safe and successful swim.
French Bulldogs can make excellent companions for families with kids. They tend to be loyal and affectionate towards those in their pack and are known for being tolerant of children playing near and around them. French Bulldogs tend to be a mild-mannered, low-energy breed, so they're not likely to be overly-rambunctious or bouncy. This breed generally gets along well with other pets as well, so you don't have to worry about them getting anxious when other animals come over.
Training a French Bulldog can be an enjoyable experience, but it does require patience and commitment. As with any breed, it is important to use positive reinforcement and consistency while training. Because French Bulldogs are an intelligent breed, they can pick up on things quickly. However, they can also be stubborn, so they may need a bit of extra incentive or reward in order to keep their focus. Additionally, French Bulldogs are very social animals, so you must ensure that they receive enough interaction with people and other animals in order for them to stay motivated.
