Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are classified as a sporting breed of dog. They are part of the Gundog Group within the American Kennel Club. Golden Retrievers are highly versatile and intelligent dogs that love to work and spend time being active. They are eager learners and thrive when given a job to do. They respond best to gentle yet firm training and make great family pets. It is no wonder that Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds in the United States and Canada.
Golden Retrievers are considered heavy shedders. While they may not be the median shedding breed, they do require weekly brushing and shedding sessions to ensure they don't get so matted that their fur would need to be cut. They have a medium-length double coat, with a luxurious water-resistant topcoat and a fluffy undercoat. While many owners occasionally clip fur from a Golden Retriever to reduce shedding, it is important to keep in mind that shedding is usually a normal and unavoidable activity for these breeds.
The best dog food for Golden Retrievers will be determined by the individual needs and sensitivities of your pet. In general, flaked or kibbled diets containing natural, wholesome ingredients such as whole grains, fresh meats, and fruits and vegetables are ideal. Look for foods that are designed specially for large or active breeds and feature high quality sources of protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It’s also important to monitor your pet’s diet for potential food allergies or sensitivities and to discuss their nutritional needs with your veterinarian.
Before bringing home a Golden Retriever, you should make sure you have all the essentials. Start by getting a collar and tag with your dog’s name and your contact information. A leash and harness are also necessary for taking your pup on walks. You should have a bed for your pup to rest in and comfy toys for them to play with. It's important to have food and water dishes, a good quality dog food, and treats. You'll need a brush for grooming as well as nail clippers and other items to maintain your pup’s hygiene.
Golden Retrievers can weigh anywhere from 55 to 75 pounds and their height can range from 20 to 24 inches. Some male Golden Retrievers may be up to a couple inches and 5 or more pounds heavier than females in the same age. A healthy and active Golden Retriever should have a full and muscular body. As puppies, Golden Retrievers usually come in four sizes: miniature (14-17lbs.), small (18-23lbs.), medium (24-35lbs.) and large (36-55lbs.), but it all depends on the pup's specific lineage.
It is recommended that an adult Golden Retriever should have at least 1 hour of exercise a day. That means walking for at least 30 minutes each day (taking into account regular breaks). This is the minimum your pup should have to stay healthy and physically fit. Depending on their age, breed, and energy level, the amount of walking may also need to be adjusted. Generally, the more active a Golden Retriever is, the more exercise they will need.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are well-known for their even-temperament, making them ideal for families big and small. Their loyalty and intelligence make them some of the most desirable breed of family dogs. They are eager to please and provide lots of unconditional love and affection. Golden Retrievers also exhibit great patience with children and demonstrate a low-level of aggression, making them ideal for families with kids. Additionally, they are generally active, and require regular exercise, which can be a great way to get the entire family involved in physical activities.
Golden Retrievers are considered to be particularly intelligent dog breeds. Through a combination of intelligence, eagerness, and a desire to please, many retrievers have proven to be quicker learners than other breeds. Golden Retrievers demonstrate a knack for problem-solving and a willingness to learn complex tasks with the proper incentive. Additionally, this breed of dog is particularly adept at using memory recall to navigate directions and perform the same tasks with only a few reminders.
