Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are incredibly playful and friendly dogs. Originally bred to retrieve shot game during hunting, they are now valued family pets and have often been used as therapy, search and rescue, and guide animals. Goldies come in many colours, although the most familiar one is "Golden" golden to cream in colour. They have a water-resistant double coat and grow to be quite large – up to 24 inches in height and 65 pounds in weight. Goldies make loyal companions who are eager to please and enjoy taking part in activities and sports such as agility, obedience, and trailing.
Golden Retrievers have a thick double-layered coat which, when it sheds, can lead to an abundance of shedding, especially during their shedding seasons. Their coats will replace older hairs with newer ones, and since they are so thick, it can lead to a significant amount of hair being shed. While regular brushing and grooming can help manage the shedding, it's not possible for Golden Retrievers to be completely non-shedders.
Golden Retrievers require a balanced diet that is specifically tailored to meet their nutritional needs. Generally, this will consist of high-quality, nutrient-dense, dry kibble packed with protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, supplemented with appropriate amounts of wet food, canned food and treats. Some owners prefer to feed their Golden Retriever a homemade diet, mixing grains with cooked meat and vegetables or a raw diet of some combination of meat, bones, vegetables, and fruits.
To ensure your home is ready to welcome your new Golden Retriever, it's important to give it a thorough checkup and make any necessary updates. Start by double-checking that your house is safe and secure, making sure all electric cords are out of reach and anything that could be considered a choking hazard is removed. Make sure all windows have screens in them and your yard is also secure and pet-friendly. Consider purchasing chew toys and a comfortable crate for your dog, and make sure to have food and water dishes that are the appropriate size.
Golden Retrievers are often thought of as medium to large-sized dogs, averaging between 55 and 75 pounds in weight. Although they may not be considered "big dogs," they do usually stand between 21 and 24 inches tall at the shoulder. This makes them an ideal family companion who will fit nicely into the home. They have wonderful temperaments, are loyal, friendly, and intelligent, and these qualities are often accompanied by their attractive coats. Golden Retrievers usually have a long, flowing coat of golden to cream color which makes for a beautiful appearance.
Golden Retrievers are an active breed and require regular exercise to remain both physically and mentally healthy. They will be satisfied with at least an hour and a half of activity a day, including both physical and mental stimulation, such as going for a walk, playing fetch or providing a puzzle toy. As working dogs, Golden Retrievers are also built to have lots of stamina, so if you can give them more than two hours of exercise spread throughout the day, that's even better.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers have many qualities that make them great family dogs. They are a highly intelligent breed, known for their friendly personalities and eagerness to please. They are also calming, gentle, loyal, and patient, making them great companions for children and adults alike. They are highly trainable and adaptable, so they can learn a variety of commands and get along well in a variety of living arrangements. They also enjoy being active and spend plenty of time engaging in rigorous exercise, such as running and swimming, making them an ideal breed for families who love to stay active.
Training your Golden Retriever is an important part of being a pet owner and there are several things to consider. Start with basic obedience commands such as Sit, Down, Come, Heel and Stay. These commands will establish a routine and help to keep your pup safe. When training, use positive reinforcement -reward with treats and praise. Consistency is key, so use the same words and tone of voice when training. It can also be useful to enroll your pup in obedience classes or consider professional training. Socializing is also important for the development of a well-behaved pup.
