Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are popular family pets known for their intelligence, easygoing nature, and loyalty. What makes these animals so unique is that they are eager to please and can be trained to do a variety of tasks. Golden Retrievers have an inherent ability to make eye contact, which helps them learn complex commands from their owners. They can often help with chores around the house, and they are natural swimmers which allows them to take part in a variety of activities like waterfowl hunting. Golden Retrievers are also incredibly social animals and enjoy being around people.
Golden Retrievers are not non-shedding dogs. They are heavy seasonal shedders, and brushings two to three times a week are recommended to manage the shedding. In the summer months, when your Golden Retriever sheds the most heavily, you may need to brush more frequently. That said, the breed is a relatively low-shedding breed and does not lose as much fur as some of the other fluffy double-coated breeds such as collies, huskies, and shelties.
Golden Retrievers can benefit from an age-appropriate, high-quality diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables as well as proteins from sources such as chicken, fish, eggs, lamb, beef, and turkey. It’s important to provide all the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients they need, such as fatty acids, fiber, calcium, and phosphorus. Consistency in the diet, along with fresh and clean water at all times, is also important to maintain your Golden Retriever’s health.
Before welcoming your new Golden Retriever into your home, make sure you have the essentials like a collar and leash for walks, food and water bowls, food, a bed, toys, treats, puppy pads, and a grooming kit. It's important to provide a safe, comfortable, and stress-free environment for your pup. Other helpful items include a crate for potty training and containment, a collar tag, and waste bags for walks. Lastly, it's highly recommended to get pet insurance and to visit your local veterinarian for general check-ups and vaccinations.
Golden Retrievers are typically considered to be on the larger side of medium sized dogs. Generally, they grow up to a height of about 21-24 inches and a weight of between 55-75 pounds. However, depending on the sex of the dog and the size of its parents, Golden Retrievers can sometimes grow to be larger than normal with some even reaching up to 100 pounds. Although these dogs may be considered relatively large for their breed, they are generally considered to be still within the mid-sized range.
Golden Retrievers are an active breed and need plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. The amount of exercise needed for an individual dog can vary depending on age, health, and fitness level. But generally, all Golden Retrievers should get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day, divided into two or three shorter periods like a walk, playtime, or outdoor game. Providing regular walks and playtime to help stimulate their minds is key for a Golden Retriever’s overall wellbeing.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers make wonderful family pets! They are incredibly intelligent and affectionate, and they are also loyal. They are good with children, so they can be playful and gentle in family settings. Because they are highly trainable, Golden Retrievers can learn to respond to basic commands to keep them in check. As they age, they stay active and require moderate exercise for a healthy lifestyle. Lastly, Golden Retrievers have self-confidence and they are less likely to bark at anything or anyone, giving you peace of mind when visitors come over.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are widely known for being exceptionally intelligent and eager to please. They display a strong willingness and capacity to learn and can easily be taught basic commands such as sit, stay, come and more. Their intelligence and friendly nature also make them an excellent fit for working roles such as guide dog, search and rescue and even therapy. Plus, they have a remarkable recall ability making them an ideal choice for someone who wants an intelligent, loyal and easy to train companion!
