Questions & Answers
A Golden Retriever is a popular breed of dog known for its loyalty, intelligence, and cheerful temperament. Noted for its deep and lustrous golden coat, the Golden Retriever was developed in Scotland in the mid 19th century for use in hunting. Bred specifically for their retrieving abilities, these beautiful full-sized dogs love the outdoors and need lots of vigorous playtime and exercise. Golden Retrievers are friendly and gentle with people and are excellent, patient, and devoted family pets. Highly trainable, they make wonderful assistance and therapy animals.
Managing allergies with Golden Retrievers requires taking certain precautions. First, look for a Golden Retriever without any known allergies or sensitivities. Additionally, groom your pet regularly to minimize loose hair and dander, and vacuum your home more often when possible. Also, groom your pet outdoors to minimize the amount of allergens indoors, and wash your pet's bedding with hot water at least once a week. Finally, keeping the area around your pet well ventilated can also help reduce the risk of triggering allergic reactions.
While there are some human foods that can be safe for a Golden Retriever to consume, most foods should be avoided. If you're unsure, it's best to consult your veterinarian for their professional opinion. In general, avoid offering your Golden Retriever dairy products, as they are not easily digested. Additionally, try to avoid feeding your pup table scraps, as these can carry bacteria that can be dangerous and can potentially cause an upset stomach.
Before getting a Golden Retriever, you should purchase essential items like a dog collar and leash for walks, food and water dishes, high-quality food, chew toys to keep your pup entertained, cleaning supplies to keep messes at bay, a bed, a kennel for occasional use, and brushed designed to keep their coat in top shape. Additionally, talk to your veterinarian to make sure that your pup is up-to-date on flea/tick preventatives, heartworm prevention, vaccines, nail trimmer, toothbrush and dental chew toys.
Golden Retrievers are relatively large dogs, usually weighing between 55 and 75 pounds and standing 20 to 24 inches tall at the shoulders. However, males of the breed are typically larger than females, and some may weigh up to 90 pounds and stand up to 27 inches tall. Regardless of size, Golden Retrievers are athletic and energetic, and generally have a sweet temper and friendly, obedient nature. All of these attributes make them a popular breed for companion animals, both large and small.
Golden Retrievers need a fairly large amount of exercise. Generally, they need at least 30 minutes to one hour of exercise per day in order to keep them healthy and happy. Regular walks and fetching of toys can be great forms of exercise. If given vigorous activity, such as agility courses, Golden Retrievers may even need up to two hours of exercise each day. Other activities, such as swimming and jogging, can also be beneficial for Golden Retrievers in order to stay active.
Golden Retrievers are exceptionally friendly and kind-hearted, making them one of the best breeds of dog when it comes to living with children. They enjoy spending time with people of all ages and are usually gentle when interacting with younger kids. Golden Retrievers are confident and smart, making them easy to train and quick to learn what behaviors are and aren’t acceptable. Golden Retrievers are also very loyal and willing to please—this trait is especially beneficial when you’re looking for a trustworthy and dependable pet to raise alongside your children.
The amount of time you should spend training Golden Retrievers each day varies depending on the age and temperament of the dog. Generally speaking, 10-30 minutes per day is ideal. Young puppies need shorter yet more frequent training sessions so they can remember what they've learned. Meanwhile, adult dogs may need as much as one hour of training a day so they can remain fit and alert. Whatever your pup's age, consistency is key. Training should happen every day, or at least five to six days per week. Being consistent helps Golden Retrievers understand expectations and build good habits.
