Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are an intelligent, friendly, and loyal breed of dog that make great family pets. They have a high level of energy and need regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. Golden Retrievers are very social dogs and can do well in a variety of settings, including in homes, on farms, and as therapy dogs. They are generally great with children and other animals, but it's important to socialize them properly and begin training with them as early as possible.
Golden Retrievers are generally easy to manage with allergies because they are hypoallergenic and have low-to-non shedding coats. The best way to manage allergies with Golden Retrievers is to groom them on a regular basis. Brushing their coats can remove dead skin cells, dirt and other allergens that can otherwise accumulate and cause an allergic reaction. Make sure to use a shampoo and conditioner designed for sensitive skin, and use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to eliminate the allergens that can come from the dog's coat.
Knowing what not to feed your Golden Retriever is important for their health. To ensure you are providing the best nutrition and avoiding any food-related issues, additional to regular dog food there are some items you should not feed to your Golden Retriever. These can include: chocolate, sugar, salt, garlic, onions, raw or undercooked meats, alcoholic beverages, avocado, dairy products, and grapes. It's also important to keep human food away from your Golden Retriever and never feed them anything that has gone rancid or moldy.
Being the best puppy parent you can be while you wait for your Golden Retriever starts with research! As you prepare and wait for your dog, obtain as much knowledge as you can about the breed history, behavior and health. Additionally, make sure to find out about the laws governing puppy ownership and pet care in your area. You should also take time to determine what supplies you need, such as crates, toys, leashes, and bowls. Furthermore, start putting your puppy-training plan into action. Determine what methods of training and discipline you prefer and be ahead of the game.
Golden Retrievers come in a variety of sizes, ranging from small to large. They start from 21 inches tall and weigh around 40-55 pounds. Medium-sized Goldens are typically 22½ to 24½ inches tall and weigh 55-75 pounds. On the other hand, large Golden Retrievers are 24½ to 26½ inches tall and weigh 75-85 pounds or more. Ultimately, size is determined by the individual dog's genetics and its individual diet, exercise, and growth.
It is recommended that your Golden Retriever should get at least 30 to 60 minutes of exercise and activity each day. Depending on your lifestyle, you can break this up into multiple walks each day or a longer walk at least once a day. To ensure your dog is getting the exercise they need to be happy and healthy, it is best to plan for at least one or two sessions of exercise that are a minimum of 30 minutes. Anything less than 30 minutes of physical exercise is generally not enough for the majority of Golden Retrievers.
Yes, Golden Retrievers are typically considered to be a great dog breed for families with children. They are gentle and loyal, and love playing and interacting with people, particularly kids. The best way to train your Golden Retriever is to make it a positive experience for your dog. Start by keeping training sessions short and sweet. Show patience, be encouraging and reward your Golden Retriever often with treats, attention and lots of praise. Utilize both positive reinforcement and gentle, consistent corrections. Be consistent with commands; if you repeat or repeat the same command more than once, your Golden Retriever will get confused. Teach your Golden Retriever basic obedience commands such as "sit", "stay", "come" and "down".
