Questions & Answers
A Golden Retriever is a popular breed of medium-to-large-sized dog with a trusting and friendly personality. The breed originated in Scotland in the mid-1800s and is heavily bred from the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. Golden Retrievers have richly colored, soft, and wavy outer coats that compliment their powerful bodies. Their characteristics make them ideal for homes with small children or active lifestyles, as they are highly trainable, loyal, and intelligent.
Golden Retrievers do shed compared to other breeds, but they are considered a "low-shedding" dog compared to other long haired breeds. While these bunches need regular brushing which can help reduce the amount of loose fur, they still produce a moderate amount of fur due to their thick double coats. Additionally, brushing can help collect the loose strands, which you can dispose of instead of having the strands clinging to carpets, furniture, and clothing.
Golden Retrievers need an age-appropriate, nutrient-rich diet to maintain optimum health. An adult Golden Retriever should be fed a diet of high-quality dry dog food which is formulated for their specific breed. In addition, consider adding some moist foods to the dry foods such as sliced fruits and vegetables, low-fat plain yogurt, cooked eggs, and cooked hamburger with a little bit of cooked rice to give your Retriever added vitamins and minerals. Many veterinarians and breeders also recommend giving canned dog food in addition to what you feed regularly.
Prior to bringing your new Golden Retriever home, it's important to do some preparation to ensure their new environment is safe and comfortable. Start by puppy-proofing your entire home; make sure to secure any potential hazards such as household cleaners, medications, lighters, and wires. Create a designated area for your pup that includes a comfortable bed, food and water bowls, and lots of toys so they have plenty of items to help them adjust. Increased exercise will be necessary for your pup so make sure you have a secure outdoor area or yard where they can romp.
Golden Retrievers are considered to be medium-sized dogs with males typically standing between 20 and 24 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 55 and 75 pounds. It's important to note, however, that they are an active breed that requires plenty of exercise and obedience training to stay fit and well-balanced. Because of their large size, many people make the mistake of treating them like a large breed, but size alone should not define the way you care for your Golden Retriever.
Golden Retrievers need plenty of exercise, both physical and mental, to stay healthy and happy. They are known for their love of activity and outdoors, but the exact amount of exercise they need greatly depends on their age, but generally, Golden Retrievers require at least 30-60 minutes per day of walking, running, playing, or training. Younger dogs may need shorter, more frequent sessions of exercise, but no less than 10-15 minutes at a time.
Golden Retrievers are known for their loyalty and friendly nature, making them excellent companions for kids. They are in the 'sporting' group of dogs, bred for a variety of activities including games of fetch, swimming and running. Additionally, these intelligent pooches are more than willing to provide the intense loyalty and energy required by any child. As a result, Golden Retrievers have been known to make wonderful family pets. They are very affectionate and show much patience and understanding toward children, making them highly likely to be a great companion for a family.
Training your Golden Retriever should begin as early as possible, when they are still puppies. Start by establishing basic obedience commands such as 'sit' and 'stay', rewarding them with treats when they are successful. As they grow, introduce ‘come’ and ‘heel’ commands, as well as activities such as agility and scent training. Positive reinforcement is key, rewarding your dog with treats or praise when they complete commands correctly. Make sure that training is structured and consistent, as this will help in reinforcing good behaviour and discourage naughty behaviour.
