Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are a loving, lively, and extremely loyal breed of dog. They are considered one of the most popular family pets, due to their amiable nature, intelligence, and gentleness around children. Golden Retrievers require a significant amount of daily exercise such as running, walking or playing fetch. They also require regular grooming, such as brushing their coats weekly. Due to their placid nature, Golden Retrievers are known to do well as therapy dogs in nursing homes, hospices, and hospitals.
The Golden Retriever coat is typically thick and wavy, with a smooth, glossy finish. It is not too long or too short, and is usually a solid goldenor yellow-ish color. The upper coat is water-repellent, and may have some lighter feathering on the chest, stomach, legs, and tail. Despite its impressive outer appearance, Golden Retriever coats are gentle on the touch, making them ideal for cuddling and petting. Also known for their ceremonial fur, the longest hair usually grows along the underside of the neck.
Golden Retrievers are a popular breed of dog known for their cheerful temperament and intelligence. A balanced diet is essential to their overall health and development. Golden Retrievers should be fed a diet that consists mostly of high-quality, commercially available brands of dry dog food that are formulated for their specific age, weight, and activity levels. Adding wet or canned foods to their diet are also beneficial and can provide an additional source of nutrition. Other recommended foods for Golden Retrievers include lean meats, fruits and vegetables, yogurt, fish, oats, and healthy grains such as brown rice and barley.
To prepare your home for a new Golden Retriever, be sure to provide a safe and comfortable living space. Start by investing in a crate or another safe enclosed spot for your pup to relax in when they need to feel secure. Next, block off access to any areas that could be dangerous by installing baby gates or closing doors. Make sure you also plan on teaching basic obedience and housebreaking commands, and provide enough space in your yard, if you have one, for plenty of playtime and exercise.
Golden Retrievers are a medium-sized breed, standing 23-24 inches at the shoulder, and typically weighing between 65 and 75 pounds. The American Kennel Club recognizes three accepted size divisions for Golden Retrievers: Standard, Medium, and Miniature. Standard Golden Retrievers are the most commonly seen size, while Medium and Miniature Goldens are much more rare. The Miniature Golden Retriever in particular is a fairly new breed, selectively bred in an effort to keep the classic Golden Retriever temperament while producing a smaller version of the breed.
Absolutely! Taking your Golden Retriever running is an excellent way to provide them with mental and physical stimulation and bonding time. However, you should always start slow and short if your pup isn't used to this kind of exercise. A good tip is to keep your runs to a total of one to two miles a day for the first couple of weeks, gradually increasing the distance over time. It's important to note that young puppies should only be taken on short walks until they have fully developed.
Yes, Golden Retrievers are absolutely wonderful family dogs and make excellent companions for children. Yes, Golden Retrievers are incredibly smart. Not only are these loyal dogs intelligent enough to remember commands and easily adapt to new situations, but they are also highly trainable. They are especially good at performing complex tasks due to their obedience and eagerness to please. This makes them ideal for service and guide dogs, as well as therapy and search-and-rescue dogs. The American Kennel Club ranked the breed fourth out of 193 breeds for intelligence, and they need plenty of mental stimulation from their owners to stay happy and healthy, which makes Golden Retrievers wonderful family pets.
