Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are a class of working dog that are members of the sporting group. Bred first in Scotland in the mid-1800s, Golden Retrievers have become one of America's most popular breeds of dog due to their loving and loyal nature. Not only are they widely-loved as family pets, but they're also employed as assistance dogs, search and rescue dogs, hunting dogs, guide dogs, narcotics dogs and even therapy dogs. Golden Retrievers typically have a large, muscular frame and are easily recognizable by their feathered coats.
Managing allergies when you live with a Golden Retriever can be done by taking a few simple steps. It's best to groom your pup regularly in order to keep fur and dander from building up around the house. Additionally, if possible, remove carpets and other items that can easily collect dander. Frequent vacuuming is also important. You should also keep your pup's nails trimmed short so as not to scratch carpeting or furniture. Finally, it's beneficial to regularly bathe and brush your Golden Retriever to help minimize the amount of allergens in the house.
You should consult with a veterinarian to determine what foods are best for your Golden Retriever. While there are many human foods that are safe for dogs to eat, some are not. Some foods are even toxic. Generally speaking, Golden Retrievers should not eat onion, garlic, grapes, dairy, sweets, yeast dough, nuts, chocolate, avocado, and anything containing caffeine. Additionally, be sure never to give your dog bones from poultry or other meats as they can splinter and cause internal damage.
Before bringing home your new Golden Retriever, it is important to make sure your home is adequately prepared. Start by dog-proofing your home. This means going around and making sure all of your home's cords and fragile items are tucked away to prevent your pup from chewing on them. Next, obtain all the necessary supplies you will need-dog bed, food and water bowls, a collar and leash, and a crate. Additionally, make sure any hazardous materials or accessible toxins are stored away securely.
Golden Retrievers come in a variety of sizes, varying from larger dogs to smaller ones. Weight-wise, males typically range from 65-75 pounds, while females range from 55-65 pounds. Height-wise, males can range from 21.5-24 inches, and females are typically between 20-22.5 inches. Depending on their breed and parents, some Golden Retrievers can fall outside those ranges. Even so, adult Golden Retrievers across the board tend to maintain a medium size.
The exact amount of minutes per day that you should walk your Golden Retriever will vary depending on the age and fitness level of your pet, as well as the climate and physical environment it is living in. To ensure your dog maintains a healthy lifestyle, it is recommended that all Golden Retrievers get a minimum of fifteen to twenty minutes of exercise per day; however, if possible, more time should be devoted to exercise, as it will help any breed of dog to stay happy, active and content.
