Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers, also known as the "Gentleman of Dogs," are an extremely intelligent, loyal, and loving breed. They make great family and companion pets, and are friendly towards other animals. They’re also great watch dogs but don’t tend to bark too much unless they sense danger. These dogs are easy to train, love going on walks, and enjoy being around people. While they do shed, there is minimal grooming necessary. They’re incredibly easy to fall in love with due to their hilarious antics and heartbreakingly big eyes.
The Golden Retriever coat is beautiful and eye-catching! It is dense and medium-length, generally coming to the base of the tail. It has a water-repellent top coat with a straight, soft undercoat. The coat tends to be thicker around the neck and chest, and gets much lighter on the legs and underside. On average, it requires weekly brushing to remove loose hair and keep it looking great. This breed also has a tendency to shed regularly, so frequent or daily brushing during those times may be necessary.
Generally speaking, Golden Retrievers have no special dietary needs beyond what is recommended for their size and energy requirements. Like all breeds, Goldens do benefit from a diet of high quality food, preferably grain-free, that offers a balance of proteins, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients. Depending on your particular dog’s activity level and health conditions, additional supplements such as glucosamine and omega-3 fatty acids may be recommended to ensure they remain fit and healthy.
Before bringing home your new Golden Retriever, it’s important to prepare in order to make sure you’re ready for their arrival. Make sure you do your research to understand their needs, and to determine the best way to care for them and create a safe environment for them. You should also create a space in your home that is designated just for your pup, outfitted with food, toys, bedding and a spot to eliminate. Get your puppy used to a crate and set up rules and boundaries for them before they arrive and start to understand your home.
It is difficult to predict exactly how big your Golden Retriever puppy will be, as there is some variation in size. Generally, however, when fully grown, adult golden retrievers average from 21.5 to 24 inches (55 to 61 cm) tall at the shoulders and weigh between 55 and 75 lbs (25 and 34 kg). Golden Retriever puppies usually begin to reach adult size by the age of 12 to 18 months. As they mature, their size may either be larger or smaller than the average and can be affected by genetic factors and dietary habits.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are highly active, intelligent dogs with an incredible amount of energy and enthusiasm. They should always be provided with an outlet for their endless energy reserves, as their active nature can sometimes come off as mischievous or bordering on destructive behavior if they don't have a healthy way to expend energy.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are some of the most beloved and well-regarded family dogs out there. Not only are they naturally friendly and outgoing, but they are also exceptionally devoted and intelligent, qualities that make them great companions. Golden Retrievers have a natural instinct to please their owners and form incredibly strong bonds very quickly, so they make excellent pets for any family. They also require regular exercise, so they can offer the perfect opportunity to get out and get active as a family.
Training a Golden Retriever requires patience and consistency. First, familiarize yourself with basic obedience commands and how to reward and reinforce your pet's behavior when they listen to you. A good starting point is using treats when they obey commands, and positive reinforcement whenever they do something you are proud of. Once your pet has the basic obedience commands down, begin introducing tricks. This is an effective way to keep your Golden Retriever mentally and physically stimulated. Additionally, basic grooming can be part of your pet's routine.
