Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are considered to be part of the sporting group of dogs. This type of breed is an outstanding working dog, having the intelligence and energy level to excel in obedience, agility, hunting, and other varied activities. These dogs are gentle, devoted, and loyal, as well as good-natured and friendly. They are easily trained and are typically friendly with children and other pets. Golden Retrievers have a thick, water-repellent outer coat with a soft undercoat for protection against extreme temperatures.
While it is possible to have an allergic reaction to any breed of dog, there is no clear evidence to suggest that Golden Retrievers specifically carry higher risk for allergy sufferers than other breeds. Although the fur on Golden Retrievers may be more likely to trigger allergies in certain people, allergens from dander, urine, and saliva may be just as much or more of a concern for allergy sufferers regardless of breed. In order to determine whether Golden Retrievers may trigger an allergic reaction in you, it is recommended that you speak to your doctor or allergist.
Golden Retrievers are typically fed a balanced, nutritious diet to maintain their health and energy. They typically eat dry kibble, like grains and vegetables, with occasional wet food. They may also enjoy treats like fresh fruit, cooked fish, cooked eggs, or low-fat cheese occasionally. It's important to note that treats should not be more than 10% of your dog's daily diet. Whole meats are excellent sources of protein for Goldens, but should only be given as occasional treats.
Golden Retrievers are considered a relatively hardy breed, but like any other dog, they do have some specific needs. Generally speaking, Golden Retrievers require ample physical and mental activity to stay healthy and content. They require regular exercise to prevent boredom, which could result in destructive behaviors, and should be taken on at least one daily walk or play session. They also need supervision when outdoors as they can wander off easily. When indoors, provide your Golden Retriever with plenty of interactive toys and puzzles to meet their mental needs.
Generally speaking, Golden Retrievers are seen as medium to large-sized dogs. While an average-sized female Retriever may weigh as little as 55-65 pounds, a male Retriever can range from 65-75 pounds and stand anywhere from 21.5-24 inches tall. There are also "giant" varieties of Golden Retrievers that can be as heavy as 100 pounds and reach heights of 28 inches or more. While considered a larger breed, most Golden Retrievers are not intimidating due to their friendly and gentle nature.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are known for their love of water and swimming is a great way for them to get exercise. In fact, the Golden Retriever was developed in Scotland in the 19th century as a water dog and many Golden Retrievers will be eager to take a leisurely dip in a pond or an invigorating run in the surf. Swimming is a great workout for them because it is low-impact on their joints. Additionally, dog pools or splash pools are excellent options for times when natural water sources are not available.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers have won their reputation as man’s best friend for a reason. Known for their intelligence, loyalty, and outgoing nature, these furry companions are great for families. Not only do Golden Retrievers love to play, they also enjoy cuddling and being around people. They are also very devoted and will faithfully protect their owners. On top of that, they are relatively easy to train and bond with their owners quickly. All of these qualities make Golden Retrievers excellent family dogs, and they fill homes with unconditional love and companionship.
Training Golden Retrievers on a daily basis is important, and the amount of time you need to dedicate to that training depends on the age of the pup. Generally, in the first eight weeks, puppies need between 10-15 minutes of training per day, with 2-3 additional short sessions throughout the day. In the coming weeks, training sessions can be extended to 20-30 minutes, with the introduction of distractions.
