Questions & Answers
A Golden Retriever is a classic breed of friendly, family-oriented, and highly intelligent dog. Known for its trainability and desire to please its handlers, the Golden Retriever is an ideal pet for home life. They are bundles of energy that bond eagerly to their owners and excel in obedience and agility tasks. Their coat is thick, usually golden or cream in color, and somewhat waterproof, making them great for outdoor activities. Golden Retrievers are also great with children and make wonderful watchdogs as they will bark when they sense someone approaching.
Although Golden Retrievers are not typically known for being non-shedding dogs, they actually have a lower shedding rate than some other breeds. Generally, Golden Retrievers are said to be “light shedders”, with their summer and winter coats having a different degree of shedding. Frequent grooming and brushing can help reduce this shedding, making the coat stay looking cleaner for longer. Additionally, ensuring a more balanced nutrition through an appropriate diet can help improve their coat's condition, leading to less shedding.
Knowing what not to feed your Golden Retriever is an important part of pet care. The best approach is to consult your veterinarian and research the ingredients of commercial pet foods as well as home-cooked options. Avoid feeding table scraps as many human foods can be harmful to your pet, and certain types of bones can also cause injury. Chocolate, raisins, caffeine, and other sugary snacks should also be avoided. Additionally, do not feed your pet raw eggs, onions, garlic, avocados, and dairy products unless instructed by your vet.
Before getting a Golden Retriever, you should consider purchasing important essentials such as a quality food and water bowl, a comfortable and durable collar with an ID tag, a suitable length of leash, a brush, toys, and maybe a bed or blanket. You'll also want to stock up on good quality dog food, treats, and any other health aids such as multivitamins, flea/tick treatments, and heartworm prevention.
On average, Golden Retrievers are considered a medium-size breed when fully grown. They typically reach a height of 20-24 inches at the shoulder with a weight of 55-75 pounds. Depending on the individual, however, they can be substantially larger or smaller. For males, a weight of over 75 pounds and a height of over 25 inches is not unusual. For females, a height over 23 inches and a weight of over 65 pounds is quite common. That being said, any Golden Retriever over 100 pounds is considered very large for the breed.
Generally, Golden Retrievers need 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day, which should include a combination of playing and walking. Walking your Golden Retriever for 30-60 minutes a day is recommended as it provides an excellent way to bond while getting your pup the daily exercise it needs. The amount of exercise your Golden Retriever needs each day will vary depending on its age, size and overall health. Senior dogs may not need as much exercise as younger, active pups.
Golden Retrievers are generally friendly and get along very well with children. They are tolerant of the often unpredictable behavior of little ones, and their gentle, even temperament makes them ideal pets for families with kids. Their playful nature means they are often entertaining to children, and they usually have the patience to wait out any roughhousing from little ones. Not only do they make excellent playmates, but they can also provide comfort and solace when children need it. Easily trained, Golden Retrievers typically know how to behave around children and can be counted on to obey commands and follow rules.
Training a Golden Retriever is not an easy task but can be a rewarding experience. When it comes to training, the best time to start is when your puppy is young – as soon as you bring it home. Positive reinforcement is always the best method to use when it comes to training as it encourages your dog to do what you ask, rather than punishing them. Start with basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. Place treats on the floor in front of your pup and use verbal and body language cues to guide them on what you want them to do.
