Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are remarkably smart and have been known to excel in fields like search and rescue, narcotics sniffing, and service. They can be very loyal, always eager to please, and love spending time with their owners. They have a thick double-layer coat that can range in color from deep to pale gold and may have darker shading at the tips of their ears, face, and on their tail.
Golden Retrievers are not non-shedding dogs; however, they do have a moderate amount of shedding when compared to other breeds. While they are not considered to be a hypoallergenic breed and they do shed quite a bit, their beautiful coats may look like they are shedding less than other breeds. Regular grooming and brushing is recommended to help maintain the coat and reduce shedding. This breed has a double coat with a thick undercoat and a longer topcoat, which is why they require extra brushing to help keep shedding in check.
Golden Retrievers are relatively easy to feed due to their broad range of food preferences. Generally, a well-balanced diet should consist of both fresh and hearty ingredients, such as protein, vegetables, grains, and healthy fats. Feeding your Golden Retriever two meals a day of a dry or wet food made specifically to meet the nutritional requirements of the breed is recommended. Treats should be given in moderation and only make up a small portion of their overall nutrient intake.
Preparing for a new Golden Retriever is an exciting process! First, you will want to make sure you have a comfortable home for them to settle in. Make sure they have a comfy bed, chew toys, food and water bowls, lots of treats, a designated potty area in the yard, and plenty of tender loving care. It's also important to get your pup signed up for vet appointments and all necessary vaccine protocols. Be sure that all household members know and understand the rules associated with having a pet in the home.
It is difficult to predict the exact size of your Golden Retriever puppy since they have various growth rates and genetic makeups. It is most likely that your puppy will grow to an average size for an adult Golden Retriever, which is between 21.5 to 24 inches in height from the shoulder, and weighing between 55 to 75 pounds. It can take several years for them to reach their full size, and their size can be affected by diet, health, and other environmental factors.
Golden Retrievers are an energetic breed that often require a great deal of physical and mental exercise and stimulation to live their best life and avoid developing problem behaviors. An average healthy Golden Retriever should receive 60-90 minutes of physical activities, such as walks, playtime, and swimming, per day, and at least 30 minutes of mental stimulation, such as learning tricks and commands. This amount of exercise should be divided into several shorter sessions per day to keep your pup from getting overwhelmed.
Generally speaking, Golden Retrievers get along exceptionally well with children. Not only are they friendly and patient, but they also possess the intelligence and good temperament to understand their role as a family pet. Golden Retrievers are especially conscientious around younger children, and while it is suggested any interactions involving children and a pet should be supervised by an adult, Golden Retrievers understand their adoptive families as well as any breed of dog. With appropriate socialization, Golden Retrievers are also known to be tame while playing, and will often train young children on how to properly interact with a dog.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are widely known for their intelligence, making them one of the most popular breeds for service and assistance roles, as well as a great family pet. They're affectionate, devoted to their families, and very eager to please, all of which contributes to them being highly trainable with very few repetitions of instructions required. They're also capable of quickly understanding complex commands, so you can be sure that your pet Golden Retriever is both clever and loving.
