Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are commonly classified as part of the Sporting Group. Developed in Scotland in the 1800s, these intelligent dogs have adapted to various types of work, including hunting, tracking, and waterfowling. Their calm and loyal nature is why they excel in roles such as search and rescue and being a family pet. With their thick layers of fur and long ears, Golden Retrievers have an outer appearance that makes them incredibly lovable companion.
The Golden Retriever coat is thick and wavy, and comes in a light golden color. It's composed of both a long, straight outer coat as well as a soft, sustained undercoat. The coat requires regular grooming to remain healthy. This includes brushing at least two times per week throughout the year to reduce the amount of shedding. Additional brushing is necessary during twice-yearly seasonal shedding to remove the old undercoat and promote a new, stronger coat. This breed also requires consistent bath time to keep their coat oil-free, lustrous, and tidy.
Knowing what not to feed Golden Retrievers is key to keeping them healthy. Generally, it is best to stick to a balanced diet specifically for the breed. Try to avoid foods high in sugar, fat, and sodium that can cause serious health issues if ingested. Talk to your vet to ensure your pup is getting the proper nutrition. Also, never give your pup chocolate, wire, grapes/raisins, raw eggs or bones, and other household items that could be toxic. It is important to read up on the breed and research foods that can cause intestinal blockages or internal damage.
Preparing your home for a new Golden Retriever is an important step towards ensuring a safe, comfortable environment for your pet. Start by ensuring that all of your home's electrical cords and outlets are safely tucked away to avoid them chewing and/or becoming injured. Additionally, check for any potential hazards such as poisonous plants, sharp objects, and other items they may be able to access or swallow. Provide sturdy, comfortable beds and crates that make your pup feel safe and secure.
As Golden Retrievers are considered a large-sized breed, your puppy will likely grow to be quite big. Generally speaking, male Golden Retrievers usually grow to 23 to 24 inches in height at the shoulder and 65 to 75 pounds in weight. Females will usually reach a height of 21.5 to 22.5 inches at the shoulder and 55 to 70 pounds in weight. As with any breed, however, individual sizes can vary somewhat, so the size of your puppy could vary as well.
Each individual Golden Retriever’s needs vary, but you should aim for providing your pup with at least 30 minutes to an hour of exercise per day. Walking is a great way to exercise your companion while also providing them with stimulation and mental stimulation. Consider taking walks twice a day if possible; this will benefit both you and your furry friend. If lack of time or disability prevents you from walking your pup, you can reduce the time spent walking and replace it with activities like fetch or swimming; these activities can help maintain physical fitness as well as provide mental stimulation.
