Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are classified as sporting dogs, a group of eight different breeds that specialize in hunting waterfowl, including ducks and other water birds. As hunting dogs of exceptional trainability and intelligence, Golden Retrievers are highly desired for their enthusiastic, good natured personalities and adaptability to a variety of tasks. Highly prized for its biddability, a Golden Retriever is an ideal companion for a family, exceptionally loyal and loving with children, displaying all the traits of a true and trusted friend. This same breed's intelligence and alertness make them an ideal watchdog, too.
Golden Retrievers are not considered to be hypoallergenic. This is because their coats are thick, long, and their fur sheds all year round meaning that they can cause allergy symptoms in people who are sensitive to pet dander. They also tend to be boisterous dogs that constantly shed fur, further increasing the amount of dander present in the environment. It is possible to reduce the shedding by regular grooming and shampooing, but unfortunately the allergens caused by Golden Retrievers are unlikely to disappear completely.
Golden Retrievers are very active dogs and their diet needs to reflect that. Generally, the best dog food for Golden Retrievers has a high-quality protein source as the main ingredient and is low in grain sources. It is important to find a food that meets all the nutritional needs of your Golden Retriever, as well as one that has the right balance of natural vitamins, minerals, and other trace nutrients. When possible, look for a food that contains real meat as its primary ingredient, with vegetables and whole grains as secondary sources.
Preparing your home for a Golden Retriever is an important step to ensure you and your pup have a happy and healthy relationship. To get ready for your pup, begin by puppy-proofing your home by removing any hazardous items or areas that may be dangerous to your pup. This includes electrical cords, stinging or poisonous plants, and any small or away objects. Make sure your home is ventilated and avoid harshly perfumed air fresheners.
Golden Retrievers come in a variety of sizes; however, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes two separate sizes. The standard size, which weighs up to 75 lbs and stands between 21.5-24 inches, and the miniature size, which weighs up to 45 lbs and stands between 15-18 inches. In addition, there are other slight size variations, some intentionally bred-in, including the Moyen or Klein size, which weigh between 40-45 lbs. and stand between 17-20 inches.
Absolutely! Taking your Golden Retriever on a jog or a run can be a great way to get in shape while bonding with your pup. Just make sure to take it slow and get your pet used to running gradually. Start with a walk around the block and as your dog becomes more accustomed to both you and the activity, move to jogging and eventually light running. Be sure to always have plenty of water and keep the run relatively short. It's important to gauge your pup's energy level and make sure neither of you are pushing too hard.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular family dogs for a reason. They are loyal, patient, and loving. Golden Retrievers are naturally gentle and tolerant, making them ideal companions for children. They thrive on interaction, are trainable, and have plenty of energy to play with youngsters. Golden Retrievers are typically social and friendly with everyone, including kids, and they have an infinite capacity to love. If you are looking for a friendly, loving four-legged addition to your family, a Golden Retriever is a great choice!
Training Golden Retrievers is highly individual and specific to each dog, so there's no set answer for how long every Golden Retriever should specifically train each day. On average, if you are training at a semi-consistent pace, you should spend at least 15 minutes a day on basic commands such as sit, stay, come, leave it, and down. Your training sessions should be short and sweet, with frequent, positive rewards involved.
