Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are a medium-large class of dog which are most commonly classified as sporting or gundogs. Sporting dogs are typically used as family pets for activities such as fetching or swimming, while gundogs are typically used to help hunt game. A breed standard for Golden Retrievers was set by the English Kennel Club in 1903, and it remains largely unchanged today. Golden Retrievers are instantly recognizable by their beautiful golden coats, which come in colors ranging from light cream to vibrant gold.
No, Golden Retrievers are not non-shedding. They are a single-coated breed with a medium-length coat that tends to shed quite a bit. It's especially too bad if you have allergies, as dander from the shedding can trigger a reaction. While it's true that brushing your Golden's fur regularly will help to reduce the amount of shedding, you cannot completely avoid it no matter how often you brush.
Golden Retrievers are intelligent and active dogs, which means they require a diet that is specially designed to meet their nutritional needs. A healthy diet for a Golden Retriever will include an appropriate mix of high-quality proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Protein is crucial for the growth and development of your pet, so include sources like fish, poultry, eggs, beef, and lamb. For carbohydrates, feed items like brown rice, oats, barley, rye, and buckwheat.
Make sure first to puppy-proof your house by getting rid of any small objects your pup can swallow, securing all power cords and wires, and locking any doors or windows that can be accessed by your new pup. Additionally, their space should be more than comfortable, and offer a bedding area, plenty of toys, and an area for them to play. As for the basics, it's recommended to have a good quality food, food and water dishes, a brush and nail clipper, chew-proof leash and collar are also necessary, and a flea and tick preventative medication.
While Golden Retrievers are not considered a small breed of dog, they are usually relatively medium to large-sized. Golden Retrievers range in weight from 55 to 75 pounds and stand between 21 ½ and 24 inches tall. Golden Retrievers tend to be on the bigger side of the spectrum, and with proper exercise and nutrition, they can easily reach their full size and maximum weight. That said, while they may not be classified as a small breed, they can provide a lot of love in a medium-sized package, and many owners enjoy their size.
A golden retriever should get at least 30 minutes of walking each day. This includes time spent outside playing and/or exploring. Depending on your pup's age and physical condition, some activities such as swimming and agility training could be introduced and added to daily exercise requirements. If your dog is already getting a lot of exercise, you may not need to increase the amount of minutes, as long as your pup is getting adequate physical and mental stimulation. Therefore, it is important to ensure that you create a suitable exercise routine for your golden retriever.
Generally, Golden Retrievers are known for being very friendly and laid-back. They make wonderful family pets and are very tolerant and patient when it comes to interacting with children. With proper socialization, Golden Retrievers tend to get along great with kids. They are an active breed and an excellent playmate for youngsters, teaching them how to behave appropriately around dogs. Additionally, their forgiving nature allows them to overlook minor mishaps and mistakes that often happen when kids are learning how to interact with animals. All in all, Golden Retrievers are an ideal breed for households with children.
Training your Golden Retriever is a rewarding experience. It takes consistency, patience, and plenty of positive reinforcement to successfully train your pup. Start by teaching your pup basic commands such as 'sit' and 'stay'. For this, you can use a clicker and treats to reward your pup after they follow instructions. Once your pup is comfortable with the basics, you can progress to more complicated commands and training. You may also try enrolling in a basic dog training class to further refine your pup's obedience skills.
