Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are a beloved, intelligent and popular breed that belongs to the Sporting Group of dogs. This means that Goldens are praised throughout the canine world for their eagerness to please, strong retrieving skills, and eager-to-please behavior. They are well-suited to many forms of training, including tracking, agility, waterfowl hunting, search and rescue, herding, and competitive obedience. The breed is also well known for its intelligence, loyalty, and sense of humor—qualities that make the Golden Retriever a wholly unique and top-notch pet.
Golden Retrievers are generally not considered to be non-shedding dogs. While they have a relatively low shedding rate compared to other breeds, they still do shed significantly. In fact, some owners of Golden Retrievers report that they will shed a considerable amount of fur enough that regular grooming is needed to manage the shedding. When nicely groomed, however, those shedding hairs have the potential to keep the air free from allergen particles.
Golden Retrievers are active, large-breed dogs that often have a voracious appetite. To keep them in optimum health, it's important for them to receive a diet that is properly balanced for their age and activity level. Generally, a well-conditioned adult Golden Retriever should have a diet of quality brand name dry and wet food, supplemented as appropriate with fresh fruit and vegetables. It's also important to factor in treats, both store-bought and homemade, to make sure they are getting the right combination of nutrition.
To properly prepare your home for your new Golden Retriever, you should start by securing any potential house hazards. Remove items you don't want your pup to chew on and keep cords tucked away. Don't forget to puppy-proof your yard too, fixing or blocking off any gaps that they may be able to slip through. Secondly, research the breed to become familiar with the dog's physical needs and behavior. Crate train your pup to give them a safe, comforting environment. Lastly, playtime is an important activity. Gather toys and games that will help them stay mentally and physically stimulated.
Golden Retrievers are often regarded as big dogs due to their large size at maturity. Adult males grow to an average of 65 to 75 lbs. and stand 22-24 inches tall, while females rise to an average of 55-65 lbs. and a height of 20-22 inches. These are larger than the average breed such as the Miniature Poodle, which weighs in at 10-15 lbs. and stands 11-15 inches tall. Additionally, Golden Retrievers have a heavy coat and muscular physique which gives them the look of a bigger dog.
When it comes to walking your Golden Retriever, there really is no one-size-fits-all answer. Generally speaking, you should try to give your pup at least one hour of exercise per day, broken up into two or three walks. How long each individual walk should be depends on how active your pup is and the climate where you live. If your pup has high energy and/or if the weather is cooler, you may opt for two 30-minute walks.
Golden Retrievers are a great breed when it comes to getting along with kids! Not only are they gentle around children, they also tend to have loving and loyal personalities. Golden Retrievers are a great size for kids – not too big and not too small. Furthermore, they enjoy playing fetch, tug, and other types of activities that make bonding with kids even easier. As long as boundaries and discipline are in place, these delightful pooches can make great companions for children of all ages.
Golden Retrievers are highly intelligent dogs with an eagerness to please that gives their owners an advantage when training. As a result, Golden Retrievers are great companions who are easy to teach, eager to learn, and bond easily with their owners. It's true that the breed is considered among the most intelligent of all breeds, as they pick up instructions and commands quickly and respond to them with the same enthusiasm. From a young age, they can learn a variety of commands and basic tricks.
