Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers, originally bred in Scotland, are not only loyal and playful but have a rich history. For instance, this breed was initially bred to help fishermen by retrieving fish and other types of prey from the water. In addition, they were also used to help capture poachers and as part of the working service dog community, helping the blind and physically disabled.
Golden Retrievers typically do shed, however, there are a few things you can do to help reduce shedding. Consistent brushing to remove loose fur before it falls onto furniture and clothing will definitely help. Additionally, ensuring your pup is getting proper nutrition, adequate exercise, and enough rest goes a long way in minimizing shedding. Some owners even supplement with fish oil or Omega 3 Fatty Acids which helps to strengthen the fur and skin. Lastly, it is important to remember that if your pup is not receiving regular baths and haircuts, excess fur can accumulate quickly.
Knowing what not to feed Golden Retrievers can be difficult. To ensure your pup is safe and healthy, consult with your veterinarian or professional breeders for recommended diets. The American Kennel Club (AKC) also offers guidelines about what to avoid, such as chocolate, caffeine, and onions and garlic powder, which can be toxic. Furthermore, it is important to be aware of the ingredients in animal jerky treats, raw foods, and 'designer' diets that may contain excessive fat and/or empty calories.
Before getting a Golden Retriever, it's important to make sure you have all the essential items ready for your new pup. You'll need food, food and water bowls, a bed, treats, chew toys, a collar and leash, a brush, shampoos and conditioners, nail clippers, doggy waste bags, a carrier in case of vet visits, and if you have the space, a crate for training. It's also important to have the contact information of your nearest 24-hour vet, as well as a plan for regular check-ups and vaccinations.
Although Golden Retrievers are a medium-sized breed, they are not considered small dogs. Golden Retrievers generally weigh anywhere from 55-75 pounds, which is on the larger end of the spectrum for a dog. They are often considered a working breed and were initially bred to do tasks such as retrieving game, herding livestock, performing water rescues, and even acting as assistance and service dogs. This also makes them a great family pet due to their eagerness to please and their willingness to learn.
Golden Retrievers are active, energetic dogs and will need plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Generally, Golden Retrievers need an hour of exercise per day split between two to three sessions. This can include activities such as long walks, day trips to the beach, swimming, agility training, and games like catch and tug-of-war. Taking your Golden Retriever to an off-leash dog park is an excellent way for them to socialize with other dogs and remain active.
Golden Retrievers are known as one of the most family-friendly breeds due to their gentle nature and affectionate tendencies. They have a cheerful and friendly attitude to people, and especially enjoy the company of children. Because of their loving nature and friendly disposition, they are great companions for kids. Golden Retrievers are also highly intelligent and eager to please, so they can be easily trained and make excellent playmates for any age. With their calm, patient nature and willingness to learn, these dogs can make wonderful life-long friends for children and adults alike.
Training your Golden Retriever should be a fun and rewarding experience. A good place to start is by giving basic obedience commands such as sit, stay and come. Having a consistent routine is important for your pup. Start with short sessions and gradually increase the length as your pup gets better at the commands. Make sure to give plenty of positive reinforcement when they follow a command, like verbal praise, petting or treats. Socialization is another important part of training your pup. Introducing them to different people, animals, and environments is important for their development.
