Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are a highly sociable and intelligent breed, belonging to the sporting group and recognized by the American Kennel Club since 1925. They are a working breed, commonly used as gundogs and as a search and rescue dog. They make great family companions and their laid back friendly personality is a perfect match for both children and adults. Generally, Golden Retrievers have a medium energy level, are excellent for exercise, and are easy to train due to their intelligence. Furthermore, these dogs can have a lifespan up to 12 years with good care.
A Golden Retriever may not necessarily cause you to have allergies. Allergies are usually associated with proteins found in a dog’s saliva, urine and dander – the latter of which can be found on all breeds of dogs, including Golden Retrievers. If you have never had contact with a Golden Retriever before, it may be wise to observe and spend time with one in a controlled environment before committing to owning one in order to better determine if allergies will be a problem.
Researching what to feed your Golden Retriever is the best way to ensure they are getting the nutrition they need and what not to feed them. First, talk to your vet to find out what kind of foods are best for your pet. Additionally, there are many websites and resources that provide guidance on what specific foods are safe and what should be avoided. Foods like certain fruits and vegetables, certain raw meats and scraps should be avoided as could be potentially dangerous if not prepared properly.
Before taking a Golden Retriever home it is important to ensure that you have the essential supplies. This includes items such as a crate for their bed, food and water dishes, suitable food, an identification tag with your contact details, a collar and leash, a brush, a pooper scooper for cleaning up after them, and dog toys. In addition, it's also important to consider items that will make your pup feel comfortable and safe such as a bed, blankets, and a few safe chew toys that will help them to relax.
It depends largely on the pup's parentage, but on average, a full-grown adult Golden Retriever will measure between 21 and 24 inches in height at the shoulders and weigh anywhere from 60 to 75 pounds. Your pup's exact size ultimately depends on the breed of their parents and other factors such as proper nutrition and plenty of exercise. As they grow, you can look back on their records to find out your pup's size-chart lineage or arrange for an appointment with your vet to closely monitor their growth.
An ideal amount of activity for an adult Golden Retriever is 30-60 minutes per day. This should be split into two or three separate walks, allowing your dog to have mental and physical stimulation. It is important to consider the individual needs of your specific dog. If they are very active they may need more exercise, while senior dogs or those with joint pain may need less. It is important to tailer your dog’s walking routine to ensure they are getting the exercise they need to stay healthy, but not over exerting them.
Generally, Golden Retrievers are known to be an excellent breed for families with children. They are loyal, loving, and patient, which makes them great companions for kids of all ages. Golden Retrievers become very attached to their family, both adults and children alike. This breed can certainly bring a lot of joy and contentment to a family. A Golden Retriever is both gentle and playful, encouraging physical activity, imagination, and creativity in children.
Training a Golden Retriever is certainly an achievable task, but it will require patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Rewards and encouragement should be given whenever your Golden Retriever demonstrates desirable behaviors and they should be commended for their efforts. It is also important to remember that the dog is still learning and will make mistakes, so it is essential to give them an opportunity to succeed without frustration. Also, plenty of love, patience, education, and enrichment can be provided to ensure successful training and help your Golden Retriever reach its fullest potential.
