Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are generally considered one of the most popular dog breeds! They have a great temperament and make wonderful family dogs. This breed has been around since the late 1800s and was originally developed to retrieve downed game from water. Golden Retrievers are incredibly intelligent, and have even been known to work as search-and-rescue and service dogs. In addition, they are well-known for their rich, lustrous coats and their sweet, gentle nature. Interestingly, in some countries they are called "Yellow Retrievers.
Although Golden Retrievers have a basic coat of guard hairs and short down hairs, they are not non-shedding dogs. This breed of dog will shed year-round and will "blow" their coat twice a year. During these times their shedding is more frequent and can thank the breed’s popularity; because they have one of the highest rates of shedding of any breed. The amount of fur they shed depends release on the individual, but weekly grooming (brushing and bathing) may help control the shedding.
Golden Retrievers have specific dietary needs and an improper diet can lead to a whole range of health issues. The best way to ensure that your dog is getting the proper nutrition is to do some research online or talk to your vet. Dog foods that are labeled as "complete and balanced" are your best bet. Do not feed your Golden Retriever human food, as it does not contain the nutrition they need and could contain substances and ingredients that are dangerous. Also, pay special attention to foods that are high in fat, as this can lead to digestive problems.
Golden Retrievers are generally healthy and active dogs, however, they do have a few special requirements. As a breed, they require regular exercise of at least 30-60 minutes daily. Regular grooming is also essential, as their long, thick, wavy double coat can become matted and dirty if not looked after. A balanced diet is important too, as they can be prone to weight gain without appropriate food. Socialization is also important to keep them from becoming stressed or fearful. This can be accomplished through puppy classes and positive reinforcement training.
The size of your Golden Retriever puppy will depend mostly on its parents. Generally, a fully-grown Golden Retriever is about 21-24 inches high and weighs 60-75 lbs. However, some larger breeds can grow to be up to 30 inches and weigh up to 90 lbs. So it can vary significantly, especially if your puppy's parents are on the larger side of their breed! It's a good idea to do some research on the parents and what size they grow to learn more about what size your pup will most likely be when fully grown.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers have a very strong drive for physical activity and they need to exercise regularly to maintain their health. They need ample opportunity to run, explore, play and burn off some of their energy to stay well-adjusted and content. Additionally, Golden Retrievers are clever, eager-to-please, and trainable dogs that are able to learn activities such as agility or hunting. With a willing attitude and a desire to learn, a Golden Retriever owner can teach the dog new targeted activities and games which can help the dog use their energy constructively.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are a popular breed for families because of their high intelligence, dedication and loyalty to their owners. They are highly affectionate and have an eagerness to please, making them a great fit for people who want to show their pet love and be adored in return. Golden Retrievers are also incredibly active and need lots of exercise, so if you have a big backyard or plenty of nearby trails, they can be perfect for your family. Ultimately, Golden Retrievers are a wonderful breed for a family who is excited to show love, patience, and understanding.
There is no set amount of minutes per day that you need to set aside for training your Golden Retriever. Rather, the amount of time spent training your pet should take into consideration your dog's age, size, physical abilities, and energy levels. As a rough guideline, your retreats should spend at least thirty minutes per day on training activities. In addition, make sure to incorporate plenty of playtime into your dog's daily routine. This will allow them to flex their muscles as well as relieve boredom and stress, while providing an opportunity for you to practice good obedience training with your pet.
