Questions & Answers
A Golden Retriever is a loyal and friendly breed of dog native to the United Kingdom. They are a gorgeous breed, often featuring a warm, golden-colored coat with a lustrous sheen. Their loving and pleasing personalities make them great family dogs, as they are very eager to please and love children of all ages. In addition, they are intelligent and easy to train, as they possess an unparalleled desire to learn. Likewise, Golden Retrievers are eager to work, so they make for great service dogs and excel in sports like tracking, retrieving, and agility.
The coat of a Golden Retriever is generally quite thick and luxurious. Its coat is comprised of a thick, water-repellent outer layer called "guard hairs" and a softer, insulating layer called "down." Combining for a double-coat, the hair is short and neat, medallion-like on the cheeks, and slightly wavy over the back, with silky feathering on the legs, tail, and ears. They also have a pronounced facial hair, accompanied by a broad tail.
It is important to know what not to feed your Golden Retriever. Generally, it's best to stick to a high-quality dog food specifically designed for Golden Retrievers that don't contain any unhealthy fillers. Any additional food should only be given as treats and should not constitute more than 10% of your dog's daily caloric intake. You should never give your Golden Retriever human food, such as onions, garlic, avocados, grapes, or raisins, as these items can cause an upset stomach or lead to more serious health issues.
Golden Retrievers are relatively easy to care for. However, they still require some special attention. They need plenty of mental and physical stimulation so activities such as obedience training, daily walks, in-home agility training, and playing fetch can help provide them with enrichment and challenge. While allowed to play outdoors and swim, don't forget to also groom them regularly, combing out any tangles and checking for potential skin or coat issues. Golden Retrievers can have health issues including joint issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia, so keeping a healthy weight is important.
Golden Retrievers are indeed considered large dogs, weighing between 55 and 75lbs when fully grown. The breed standard height for a mature Golden Retriever is 21 to 24 inches; females tend to be smaller than males. Because of their graceful athletic build, they look less bulky than their size indicates. Golden Retrievers are widely considered a large breed, due to their size and weight. In addition, they are well known for their loyalty, intelligence, and their ability to adapt to a variety of lifestyles, making them attractive to many pet owners.
Golden Retrievers need quite a bit of exercise to stay fit, healthy, and happy. Ideally, they require at least two long walks or other forms of exercise every day. This can be supplemented by playtime in a securely-fenced yard that allows them to get the physical and mental stimulation they need. Activities such as fetching or swimming can also be enjoyed by Golden Retrievers, however, they should never be pushed too hard. Not getting enough exercise can cause behavioral issues in Golden Retrievers, so be sure to prioritize a regular exercise routine.
Generally speaking, Golden Retrievers are known to be exceptionally loyal, gentle, and friendly companions who prove to be great family pets. Because of their affable demeanor and loving personalities, Golden Retrievers typically get along well with kids. Not only do Golden Retrievers, with their boundless energy, enjoy playing and spending time outdoors with kids, but due to their patient and gentle nature, they also make good napping buddies.
Training a Golden Retriever may seem like a daunting task, however with consistency and patience it can be achieved. Every breed of dog is unique and while Golden Retrievers are known for being smart, friendly, and gentle family dogs, they still require proper training and dedication. Golden Retrievers can respond to commands quickly and prefer to please their owners which makes them relatively easy to train as long as they are given clear expectations and remain motivated.
