Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers have been around since the 19th century and were initially bred to be gun-dogs, or retrievers, to help hunt game. Their friendly personalities and intelligence make them great choices for service animals, family pets, and even film roles! Fun facts about them: they were first bred in Scotland, have been AKC recognized since 1925, have a tendency to smile, and their coats can be golden, cream, or even red. Golden Retrievers are known for their retriever instinctmeaning they love to run, fetch, and play catch.
It is a common misconception that Golden Retrievers will cause allergies and while some people with severe allergies may experience a reaction, it is not necessarily the breed that is causing the problem. Many people with allergies are sensitive to dander and hair, which can come from any pet breed, though if you are living with a standard coat Goldie you will be reducing the amount of hair that could potentially cause irritation. To reduce the risk of allergies, routinely groom your pet and keep their living area clean.
Golden Retrievers are always eager to eat, so it is important to provide them with a balanced diet that contains all of the necessary nutrients they need. The best way to ensure a healthy diet for your Golden Retriever is to feed them high-quality, complete and balanced commercial dog foods that are made for large breeds. You can also feed them homemade meals, however, this should never be the sole source of nutrition and should always be supplemented with commercial dog food to ensure they have the necessary nutrients. Fresh vegetables, yogurt, fruit and lean meats can also be used to supplement their diet.
Before bringing your new Golden Retriever home, there are a few important steps you should take to ensure your home is a safe and welcoming environment for your pup. Make sure to puppy-proof your home by locking away any potentially dangerous items such as chemicals and cleaning supplies, as well as any items you don't want your pup to chew on. Make sure any electrical cords are tucked away and identify any plants in your home that may be toxic to your pup. If your pup is not yet house trained, consider using potty pads or a litter box to help with the transition.
The full size of your Golden Retriever puppy will depend largely on its breed and environment. Generally, adult males will weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and adult females will weigh between 55 and 65 pounds. However, the size of a Golden Retriever can vary depending on its lineage and diet, as well as the amount of exercise and playtime the puppy gets. As your Golden Retriever puppy grows, it is important to take them to the vet for regular check-ups and to assess their growth.
Golden Retrievers are incredibly active, highly intelligent and incredibly loyal dogs, and they require a generous amount of physical exercise and mental stimulation each day. Generally speaking, they require about an hour of exercise per day, composed of at least two or three fifteen to twenty-minute walks and a few minutes of playtime. Additionally, they need at least a half hour to an hour of mental stimulation, including activities like obedience training or puzzle-solving games. When providing mental stimulation, it is important to challenge the Retriever so that they stay engaged.
Generally speaking, Golden Retrievers can be excellent family pets and tend to get along very well with children. They are regularly ranked high on the list of best dog breeds for families for this very reason. They are friendly, patient and loyal, all qualities that make them well-suited for life with children. Golden Retrievers are sociable and eager to please, so most enjoy and look forward to interacting with humans of all sizes.
Training a Golden Retriever should always start with positive reinforcement. This can include verbal praise, treats, or small rewards such as playing with its favorite toy. It is important to start training with simple commands such as sit, stay and come; then gradually increase the difficulty of the commands as your Retriever progresses. Consistency is key when training a Retriever, and it is important to give the same command multiple times before expecting any sort of behavior change from your Retriever.
