Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are a great breed of loyal, loving, and family-friendly dogs. They originated in Scotland in the late 1800s, and are now among the most popular dogs in America. Fun facts about Golden Retrievers include that they are the 4th smartest breed of dog, according to Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs. They have an extraordinary sense of smell that has been used for both tracking and hunting. Another fun fact is that Golden Retrievers have a near-limitless capacity for affection and are known for their gentle nature and willingness to please.
The new Golden Retriever coat is often described as a shinier than normal Retriever coat, adding a heavily sought after quality. The coat should have an overall smooth and straight finish being of a medium length. The thick, double-layered coat provides great insulation but also helps with the “water-proof” quality. The water should bead off the coat making it an ideal breed for wet weather. The classic Golden Retriever color is “Golden” ranging from a Creme to a Red hue that can be combined with white on the chest and feet.
Golden Retrievers are known for being relatively easy to care for and they have a very varied diet. Although their main source of nutrition is a dry dog food, they enjoy eating other things like eggs, vegetables and fruits, and even freshly cooked meats. Whilst they regularly enjoy wet food for a special treat, care must be taken to ensure they are not overfed on these as it can lead to obesity problems. Golden Retrievers should also be given a suitable number of treats throughout the day, as may benefit their diet. Of course, fresh drinking water should also be available at all times.
Before getting a Golden Retriever, you should consider purchasing some essentials that will ensure your pup will be as prepared as possible when joining your family. Things like a collar and leash to take them for walks, food and water bowls, a bed, safe chew toys, and a brush for grooming are some of the most important items. You may also want to purchase treats, waste bags, and a crate so that your Golden can have a safe space of their own to relax.
Golden Retrievers usually grow to be between 20 and 24 inches high at the shoulder and can weigh between 55 and 75 pounds. With good nutrition and exercise, Golden Retrievers can reach their full size by the age of 18 months, but they don't usually stop growing until they are two to three years old. They tend to be a bit longer than they are tall and have thick, wavy coats that may be golden or cream in color. It is important to make sure your Golden Retriever receives the proper nutrition and exercise to reach its full size.
Golden Retrievers need plenty of exercise to help keep their minds and bodies active. Generally, an hour of exercise per day is ideal, though the amount of exercise can depend on the individual dog's age, size, health and activity level. For young or energetic dogs, it's important to provide at least two separate exercise sessions, including a daily walk and plenty of playtime. Older or less active dogs may benefit from shorter, more frequent exercise and activities such as swimming, jogging, fetching, agility or obedience training.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are one of the most friendly and loyal breeds of dog. They make wonderful family pets, even around small children. They display a great energy level and trainability which makes them ideal for family activities. Golden Retrievers have an old-soul kind of wisdom and are extremely playful, filled with love and affection. They form strong bonds with their owners and are known to be very good listeners. Simply put, Golden Retrievers are a great companion for any family.
The amount of time per day that you should dedicate to training your Golden Retriever highly depends on your pup's individual needs and goals. The amount of time can range from just a few minutes to a few hours. The best way to determine the appropriate length of time is to assess your pup's needs and goals and then adjust from there. Start off with a few minutes each day and gradually increase the amount of time as your pup's skills progress and develop. Training should always be a positive and enjoyable experience for your dog.
