Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are bright, loyal, and intelligent dogs that are known for their beautiful golden coats! They were developed in Scotland as a gundog breed and have become popular as a pet or service animal.
While Golden Retrievers are not non-shedding, they do not shed as much as other breeds, such as Huskies or German Shepherds. Their fur is more of a feather-like texture and their coats do not trap dirt and other allergens as much as other breeds. While they do shed, regular brushing and grooming will drastically reduce the amount of fur that they shed through your house, and you should be able to keep up with it. Additionally, Golden Retrievers possess hypoallergenic coats, which can be beneficial for people with allergies.
Golden Retrievers are generally a breed of dog that requires a diet mainly composed of protein. To sustain their usually high levels of energy, they need protein from foods such as lean meat, fish, and poultry, as well as vegetables and grains. Commercially made dog food designed specifically for Golden Retrievers is an excellent, highly nutritious option. However, these dogs also benefit from table scraps, as long as it is lean meats, vegetables, and some dairy. It should be noted that dairy products should not be given to puppies as they lack the enzyme necessary to digest it.
If you are eagerly awaiting the arrival of your Golden Retriever, there are several measures you can take to ensure you become the best puppy parent possible. To prepare, you should research and obtain a thorough understanding of the breed’s needs including exercise, nutrition, socialization and training. Joining a breed organization or puppy pre-school is a great way to get knowledgeable, first-hand info from experienced dog owners. Additionally, it is a great idea to begin to puppy-proof your home by covering electrical cords and placing any potentially hazardous items out of reach.
Golden Retrievers are not considered small dogs for the most part. While some may appear smaller due to age or other factors, they generally fit into the medium to large dog breed categories. On average, females reach 22 to 24 inches in height and weigh an average of 55 to 65 pounds. Males, on the other hand, reach a height of 23 to 24 inches and weigh an average of 65 to 75 pounds. While the actual size will depend on the individual dog, Golden Retrievers are typically taller than other small dog breeds.
The amount of exercise your Golden Retriever needs depends largely on the age and health of your dog. As a general rule of thumb, you should aim to provide your pup with at least thirty minutes of physical activity per day. If your Golden Retriever is a puppy or an older dog, you may need to add an additional 20-30 minutes to that daily total. Walking is one of the best forms of exercise for Golden Retrievers, as it helps to keep them mentally and physically fit.
Golden Retrievers are great family dogs and make fantastic companions for first-time owners. Not only are they highly intelligent and friendly, but they are also relatively easy to train and are highly loyal. Golden Retrievers are very kind and love to please their owners, providing hours of playful and happy companionship. On top of that, they need a moderate amount of exercise and do best with plenty of mental stimulation and socialization with other dogs and people. Given their gentle disposition, these breeds are great for people new to pet ownership and are a wonderful addition to any home.
Training your Golden Retriever can be an enjoyable experience, and it doesn't always require a professional dog trainer. Start by giving your dog lots of praise and rewards, such as treats or verbal praise, for performing activities correctly. As you begin training your Golden Retriever, be sure to keep training sessions short and positive. Negative reinforcement or punishments are never recommended as they can cause fear or anxiety. Be sure to set achievable goals, such as how to walk on a leash or proper crate training, and break the larger goal into smaller, achievable steps.
