Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are a large-sized breed of dog that is considered to be a sporting group. They are known for their loyalty, friendliness, and intelligence. Originally bred to retrieve shot waterfowl such as ducks and geese during hunting and shooting parties, they are also renowned for their obedience. They have medium-length, soft coats in shades of gold, ranging from a pale cream to a rich golden bronze. Golden Retrievers are not considered hypoallergenic breeds. Generally, if a person has allergies to pet dander, involving a Golden Retriever can still possibly trigger an allergic reaction. The breed does shed its fur, which can further agitate allergies. With that said, there are various things an owner of a Golden Retriever can do to potentially alleviate the symptoms of someone with allergies, such as brushing and/or bathing their pet more frequently, which helps to reduce the amount of loose fur and dander.
A well-balanced diet for a Golden Retriever consists of high-quality complete and balanced pet food, supplemented by occasional treats and enough fresh water supplied at all times. Meat should be the primary ingredient in the food, and it should be supplemented by grains and vegetables to make sure the dog is getting all of the essential vitamins and minerals. Only certain people food should be fed as treats such as pieces of carrots, green beans or cooked cranberries, and all processed treats should be fed in moderation. Treats should not replace meals because too much can lead to health problems.

They are also active and need plenty of daily exercise that can range from walks to more strenuous physical activities, making them great companions for outdoor activities.
Golden Retrievers are intelligent dogs with a ton of energy, so it's quite important they get enough regular exercise. Generally speaking, adult Golden Retrievers need about 60 minutes of exercise per day, with 30 minutes consisting of moderate activity like a brisk walk, and the other 30 minutes of more intense activities such as running and swimming. Younger puppies will require shorter periods of exercise, however it is best if you start them out with 15-20 minute walks twice a day.
