Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are an incredibly devoted and affectionate breed. They make wonderful companions and require a lot of love. As such, they need regular exercise, engaging activities, as well as regular grooming and vet visits. Golden Retrievers are also very intelligent, which makes them easy to train. Common tasks, such as basic obedience and commands, can be learned quickly with consistent rewards. Despite their friendly and loyal nature, they can often be opinionated and have difficulty adjusting to new people or environments.
Golden Retrievers are not considered to be non-shedding dogs. The breed typically requires regular brushing and coat care; their lack of a double coat means they shed more than other breeds. Their long, dense and often wavy coats do tend to shed heavily during particular times of the year. During this time, regular brushing and grooming will help minimize the amount of hair that is shed. Regular baths and brushing are also recommended to keep their coat shiny and in excellent condition.
Golden Retrievers are active and energetic dogs and, as such, need a diet that meets their nutritional demands. As part of the retriever family, a Golden Retriever should eat quality dog food that is designed for active sporting dogs. An optimal food choice usually contains generous amounts of protein from poultry and fish, carbohydrates in form of whole grain cereals, fats from animal or vegetable sources, and additional vitamins and minerals to ensure a balanced diet. Some human foods like fruits and vegetables can also be provided but in moderation, as not all human foods are safe for dogs.
Golden Retrievers are loving, loyal and intelligent dogs that require plenty of time and attention, as well as obedience training and socialization in order to be happy, healthy members of your family. While they do not have any special grooming requirements, activity needs or dietary demands, Golden Retrievers do require ample space to run and play. Providing consistent exercise in a safe environment is key to developing and reinforcing sound behavior. Furthermore, mental stimulation, such as puzzle toys, games, or agility training, are important to keep the Golden Retriever’s active mind occupied.
Golden Retrievers are considered one of the larger breeds of dogs, generally growing to around 65-75cm at the shoulder and weighing 30-45kg when fully grown. This makes them a great size for households that want a companion that isn't too small or too large. They are considered to be highly intelligent, obedient, and friendly, making them a great family pet. Their thick golden coats really stand out and they're even-tempered, making them an ideal family pet for people of all ages.
Absolutely! Golden Retriever breeds are known for their exuberance and energy yet they are gentle, making them one of the top breeds in the canine world. Frequency of exercise is something that's very important for a Golden Retriever as they are a high energy breed and need lots of activity to remain healthy and happy. Although this breed is typically very active, there is still some variation within the breed. Some Goldens may be more laid back while others may have a higher level of energy and need more exercise.
Yes, Golden Retrievers typically get along extremely well with children of all ages. As a loving and friendly breed, Golden Retrievers are known to be patient, tolerant, and outgoing, making them perfect companion dogs for families with kids. Golden Retrievers also have an innate desire to please their owners and children. They are easy to train and eager to learn, making them great family dogs that are a joy to have around. Additionally, Golden Retrievers typically don't show aggression or dominance, so they make suitable playmates for children.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are considered some of the smartest dogs around and have consistently ranked in the top of the intelligence scale when it comes to breeds. They have great memories, can quickly learn new commands and are able to remember them for long periods of time. They also have a great capacity for understanding and comprehending their environment, which makes them the perfect candidates for service and therapy animals. With the right amount of training, they are very trainable and reliable pets.
