Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are beloved family pets known for their intelligence and warmth. They have thick, silky, water-repellent coats that come in yellow, cream, and even red. They’re incredibly friendly and gentle, making them great additions to households with families, young children, and other pets. Golden Retrievers are especially active and need regular exercise, and they’re also eager learners, so they’re a great choice for those who want to train their dog in tricks or obedience.
Golden Retrievers are not hypoallergenic despite their generally considered low to non-shedding coat. All breeds of dogs such as Golden Retrievers can produce dander, saliva and urine that can cause allergies. Studies have shown that dander is the primary allergen in most cases, with saliva and urine allergies being very rare. Most breeders will tell you that while a particular breed may generally be low shedders or non-shedders, some individuals within that breed will produce more allergens than others.
Golden Retrievers require a diet that is rich in proteins, minerals, vitamins and other essential nutrients to stay healthy and active. They should be fed a balanced diet consisting of high-quality kibble or wet food. It's best not to give them processed food, as this tends to contribute to gastric and dental problems. Feeding them table scraps, bones and rawhide treats should be done in moderation and monitored to ensure they are getting the proper nutrition. Be sure to feed them the correct portion sizes, as too much food can cause obesity-related health problems.
Preparing your home for a new Golden Retriever is an important step in ensuring that it is a safe and welcoming environment for your pet. Start by puppy-proofing your home to make sure there are no dangerous items around, like electrical cords or toxic plants. Create a designated space for your pup where they can feel safe and secure, complete with a bed and their favourite toys and chew items. Establish a routine and use positive reinforcement when it's time for meals and potty breaks. Lastly, be sure to have a sturdy leash and collar that fits comfortably for walks around the neighbourhood.
While Golden Retrievers may not be considered giants amongst canine breeds, they are typically classified as a medium or large-sized breed. Typically, an adult male Golden Retriever may weigh anywhere from 65 to 75lbs and have an average height of 22-24 inches, while females usually weigh slightly less and may be shorter in size. As a whole, when compared to other smaller breeds such as Chihuahuas and Toy Poodles, it can easily be said that Golden Retrievers are a big dog.
Golden Retrievers need a lot of exercise to stay healthy and happy. A daily walk of at least 30 minutes is recommended, and off-leash exercise such as playing fetch is excellent. Longer walks or runs can be very beneficial, as long as the temperature is moderate and you are cautious of signs of fatigue. Swimming is ideal to keep their chest and core muscles toned and healthy. Engaging in agility and obedience activities is another great way to mentally challenge and physically stimulate your Golden Retriever.
Yes, Golden Retrievers are renowned for their exceptional ability to get along with children. These friendly and devoted dogs make ideal playmates, eager to be cuddled, petted and doted on. Golden Retrievers possess a sweet temperament and gently nature that makes them a natural fit in family settings. They are also highly intelligent, easily trainable, and willing to obey, making them ideal candidates for learning the basics of obedience, walking on a leash, and other behaviors.
The amount of time spent training Golden Retrievers each day will vary depending on the individual pup, but all dogs require consistent, positive reinforcement to learn effectively. Generally speaking, plan to dedicate at least 15 minutes a day, broken up into multiple 5-10 minute sessions so that the pup stays focused and engaged while training. If you can commit more time to the pup, that's great too. Try to mix it up and use different environments; such as a park, a field, or your backyard.
