Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and affectionate personalities. However, the most interesting attribute about Golden Retrievers is their incredible ability to serve and work with humans. They are avid learners and excel in support roles such as therapy, Search and Rescue, police, guide, hearing, and special needs assistance. They also enjoy participating in sports and activities such as dock diving, agility, flyball, and obedience. All of these activities are incredibly impressive considering they are obedient, loyal, and affectionate yet hardworking and still love to be on the go!
One of the best ways to manage allergies associated with Golden Retrievers is to vacuum your home regularly and dust often. Keep the hair of your Golden trimmed short and brush it while outside, as it can help to decrease the amount of allergens that enter your home environment. If possible, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter which is designed to catch particles as small as dust mites and allergens from your pets. Wash your bedding and other fabrics weekly in hot water, as this will help to reduce the amount of allergens produced by your Retriever.
Golden Retrievers are medium-sized dogs and typically have a voracious appetite. It's important to ensure they are getting the right nutrition that is suitable for their breed and age. Experts recommend that Golden Retrievers should be fed a high quality dry kibble that has enough protein for additional energy and include natural sources of important vitamins, minerals and fiber. As with any breed, it's important that their diets are supplemented with nutrient-rich foods such as lean meats, fruits and vegetables. Additionally, chewable treats can help meet their nutrient needs while strengthening teeth and gums.
Preparing for a new golden retriever can be an exciting but challenging experience. To ensure you and your pup have a good start, it's important to set up a safe environment with supplies such as food, water, a bed, toys, and collar with tags. It's also important to look into training for you and your pup. Consider enrolling in an obedience class or hiring a professional trainer to learn better techniques. Take time to set boundaries for your pup and understand that consistency is the key to a happy, healthy pet.
Golden Retrievers typically reach their full size between 18 months and 2 years old and can stand anywhere between 22" to 24" tall and weigh between 65 to 75 pounds. Females tend to be on the smaller side while males will usually be closer to those upper numbers. On average, most Goldens will be about 23" tall and weigh 70 pounds. They are a medium sized breed, making them the perfect size for an active home with a yard or an apartment.
Golden Retrievers need a great deal of exercise to remain healthy and balanced. Generally speaking, they should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day; this can consist of walks, jogs, or a combination of activities. The best routine consists of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, such as running or swimming, combined with 30 minutes of interactive activities, such as playing fetch or teaching tricks. In addition to exercise, the recommended daily activity should also include interactive activities to stimulate the Golden Retriever's mind and help him focus.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are renowned for being wonderful family dogs that are naturally good with kids. Not only are they gentle and tolerant, they're also intelligent and patient which makes them perfect for families with small children. Golden Retrievers are known to be loyal and devoted companions whose incredible protective and loving nature makes them an ideal pet for children. They make great playmates and can help children learn how to better interact with animals.
Golden Retrievers are commonly referred to as one of the smartest breeds of dogs. Not only do they have the intelligence for obedience training, but they often learn commands quickly and remember them even long after training. In fact, owners of Golden Retrievers often remark that their dogs often figure out ways to get what they want, such as bringing a toy to the owner so that they receive attention. These traits often showcase the fact that Golden Retrievers show emotional intelligence, a trait which is often seen in some of the smartest canine breeds.
