Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States! They are friendly, intelligent, and loyal. Some fun facts about Golden Retrievers are that they were originally bred in the mid-19th century in Scotland for hunting, and they can learn up to 200 words and gestures! They are one of only two breeds considered to be "directly trainable", which means that they are able to remember and repeat commands after hearing or seeing them only once. They also have an incredible sense of smell, making them great candidates for various search and rescue assignments.
Managing allergies with Golden Retrievers requires pet owners to be proactive. To reduce exposure to allergens, Golden Retrievers should be regularly groomed using a hypoallergenic shampoo. Additionally, carpeting and fabric furniture can act as magnets for pet dander and other allergens, so hard floors and leather furniture are preferable if allergies are an issue. Vacuuming frequently and regularly washing bedding is also essential. If petting your Golden Retriever worsens your allergies, remind yourself to wash your hands after contact and invest in a good-quality air purifier.
It is important to be aware of the types of food that are safe to feed your Golden Retriever. The best way to ensure your pet is getting the nutrition they need is to consult with your veterinarian and/or a qualified pet nutritionist to create a diet that is tailored to you dog's specific dietary needs. You should also be aware that common "people food" like onions, grapes, garlic, chocolate, and excessive amounts of fat, sugar, and salt can be toxic to your pet. You should never feed your dog avocado, nuts, and raisins either.
The key to becoming the best puppy parent when you are awaiting your Golden Retriever is to prepare in advance. Being prepared means doing your research and gaining knowledge about the breed, attending puppy training classes, having items needed for your puppy such as food, treats, crate, toys, and other products, and being able to provide plenty of social interaction and exercise. Lastly, be patient and expect to set aside plenty of time for your puppy as Golden Retrievers are known to be active and may take some time to adapt to their new environment.
Generally, Golden Retrievers reach an average adult weight of anywhere between 55 and 75 pounds. Male Golden Retrievers can grow to a height of 23 inches at the shoulder, while females can reach 21.5 inches. As puppies, they tend to grow quickly, gaining 5-10 pounds a month until they reach their adult size. But as they get older, their growth rate slows down. Although there is some variance, Golden Retrievers usually reach their full size around one to two years of age.
Absolutely Golden Retrievers are renowned for their active and friendly natures!
