Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are one of the world's most popular dog breeds. They were developed in the Scottish Highlands and used as hunting dogs by Lord Tweedmouth in the 1800s. They are gentle, loyal, and smart. Golden Retrievers typically weigh between 55 and 75 pounds and have an average life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. They get along well with people and other animals. They typically have a thick, medium-length coat, although some can have longer coats. Interestingly, the darker Golden Retrievers are generally the male and the lighter ones are usually female.
Golden Retrievers are not hypoallergenic dogs; although their coats are relatively low-shedding, they do not qualify as being hypoallergenic. A hypoallergenic dog is one that are less likely to cause any allergic reactions in people that typically experience allergic reactions due to pet dander. This is because these specific breeds have coats that produce negligible amounts of, or no dander at all.
It is important to know what not to feed your Golden Retriever in order to ensure their health and wellbeing. Generally, foods that are high in fat, sugar, and salt should be avoided, as well as any chocolate-based snacks. Raw meats, onions, garlic, and anything containing caffeine are also not recommended. Most importantly, never feed your Golden Retriever bones or pits, as these can lead to serious digestive and oral health problems. Keep in mind that it is very difficult for these dogs to digest grains, so be careful when feeding them grain-based products.
Golden Retrievers are a delightful breed, but they do have some special requirements that a potential owner should be aware of. Generally speaking, they have an abundant amount of energy and need daily exercise and activity to stay happy and healthy. They also require a significant amount of grooming and brushing in order to keep their thick coats looking great. As intelligent animals, Golden Retrievers also need plenty of mental stimulation. Owners should provide outlets like obedience training, agility, puzzle toys, and games to ensure their pet is adequately challenged.
Golden Retrievers are often considered a large-breed dog. They typically weigh between 55 and 75 pounds when fully grown, making them bigger than some small-breed dogs but smaller than some giant dogs. On the other hand, the size of some other breeds, such as German Shepherds, can vary greatly and can go from larger sizes of around 85 pounds to smaller sizes of around 50 to 60 pounds. It all depends on the individual genetics and background of the breed. Generally speaking, Golden Retrievers are considered big dogs.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are often referred to as the “swimmer’s dog” because of their natural inclination towards water. In fact, a well socialized and trained Golden Retriever not only loves to swim, but is also likely to take the initiative to hop in the pool or lake without any prompting. The breed was valued for its strength and stamina in water, and are often used to locate objects underwater.

Golden Retrievers are known for being intelligent and highly trainable dogs, making them a popular companion for families.
