Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are classified as sporting dogs, and more particularly, as flushing spaniels. Golden Retrievers have a medium-sized, well-balanced body with a wavy, full coat of thick, luxurious fur. They have strong tails that apt to be docked short and ears of medium length, and they usually have kind, friendly eyes. Golden Retrievers are even-tempered and hard-working, and are characterized by intelligence, loyalty and gentleness.
Golden Retrievers have a double-layer coat that is both silky and water-resistant. The top layer typically has a longer length and the undercoat is often crimped, shorter, and fluffier. Golden Retrievers also have feathering; fur on the legs, chest, and tail that is often long and flat. It's said that this type of coat helps to keep the breed warm in icy waters during hunting.
Golden Retrievers are intelligent, active dogs who need the right diet to stay healthy and happy. Generally, an adult Golden Retriever should eat a high-quality dry dog food that is designed for active dogs. The amount and frequency of food will depend entirely on the size of the dog, their age, activity level and other individual factors. Ideally, the food should have a good balance of proteins, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and other vital nutrients to support the breed's high energy levels.
It is essential to prepare your home for your new Golden Retriever. Before bringing your new pup home, establish a safe area with plenty of space for them to explore and play. Add some comfortable bedding for them, and be sure to dog-proof the area if there are potential hazards such as electrical cords or plants. Make sure your pet has access to their own water bowl and food, as well as healthy treats. Provide your pup with a variety of toys and chews to keep them entertained and stimulated.
Golden Retrievers are considered to be medium-to-large in size when they reach adulthood. They stand between 21.5 – 24 in tall and weigh between 55 – 75 lbs as adults. They are a larger breed compared to small dogs like Chihuahuas and Toy Poodles, so they are not typically considered small dogs. Despite their size, Golden Retrievers are always eager to please, with an affectionate and gentle personality. They are considered the perfect companion for families and people of all ages.
Golden Retrievers need quite a bit of exercise in order to stay healthy and happy. They benefit from long daily walks or runs, so at least part of their exercise should come from that. Beyond this, Golden Retrievers also need time for activities such as playing fetch, going to the dog park, and swimming. Proper physical and mental exercise for the breed is important in managing their energy, supporting their longevity, and providing general stimulation.
Golden Retrievers are known for their kind, affectionate, and loyal personalities, which often make them great family dogs. Like any other breed, they generally get along very well with children if they are trained and socialized from an early age. In fact, most Golden Retrievers enjoy spending time with kids and display a very patient and loving temperament with them. The American Kennel Club even describes Golden Retrievers as "the perfect companion for families with children." With the right kind of behavior coaching, these lovable pups can become a part of a family for years to come.
Training a Golden Retriever can be a rewarding experience, but it is certainly not a one-size-fits-all process. Depending on the individual dog, some owners may find it easier than others. Golden Retrievers are typically highly motivated, intelligent pups, which could make the training processgo smoother than a dog that is less trainable. But no matter the breed, consistent and gentle training will result in a well-mannered pup that you can take anywhere.
