Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are classed as sporting dogs and are part of the gun dog group. They are known for being intelligent, loyal companions that have been used widely for hunting and field activities. Golden Retrievers make excellent family pets and are known for being devoted and gentle with their family members. They are well-mannered and easy to train, and their outgoing, friendly personality make them great with kids. Other characteristics that define the breed include their kind, loving nature, good temperament, and pleasant attitude.
Golden Retrievers do not have non-shedding coats, but their shedding is minimal compared to many other breeds. While these friendly and reliable dogs will still shed, they tend to have a lighter coat so there is less fur leaving the body than with other breeds. That being said, consistent grooming will go a long way to keep your Golden Retriever's coat healthy and minimize the amount of shedding throughout the entire year. Therefore, while Golden Retrievers are not necessarily non-shedding, their shedding is usually manageable.
Golden Retrievers are quite versatile when it comes to their diets as they can eat both dry kibble or wet food. They generally require a balanced diet that contains protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Depending on activity level, age, and other factors, the ideal diet may vary somewhat. Therefore, when choosing a food, you may want to consult with the advice of your vet to make sure you are feeding your Golden Retriever the right daily portion and nutrient content that is best for them.
Before bringing a Golden Retriever pup or adult into your home, you should make sure you have the following items on hand as essentials: a leash, collar, and ID tag; food and water bowls; brushes and other grooming tools; a crate or exercise pen; potty training pads; good quality food specifically designed for Golden Retrievers; safe and durable toys; a comfy bed; and something to soothe their anxiety, like a ThunderShirt or calming treats.
Golden Retrievers typically reach a height of anywhere between 21 and 24 inches and can weigh from 55 to 75 pounds. Depending on the individual Retriever's genetics and environment, they can sometimes reach a larger size, but this is not the norm. On the whole, these docile yet energetic dogs tend to stay to the above height and weight ranges. While they may appear rather large in their early years, Golden Retrievers have a slower rate of maturity and will continue to grow and fill out until they reach about three years of age, when they are considered fully grown.
Golden Retrievers are widely known to be one of the most active and friendly breeds of dog. Generally considered an excellent breed for families due to their people-pleasing personalities, they have a natural instinct to stay active and desire companionship. They require regular physical and mental exercise to stay agile, healthy, and alert. Golden Retrievers are highly responsive to training and can learn difficult tasks quickly, making them suitable for a variety of activities such as obedience classes, agility training, field trials, hunting, tracking, and more.
Golden Retrievers have a calm, friendly, and loving personality, making them the perfect family dog. They are especially good with kids they've known since they were puppies due to their natural readiness to please. In addition, they can provide children with hours of safe play, and protection when needed. Unlike other breeds, Golden Retrievers are unlikely to become over-protective, or overly aggressive. They are also well-known for their qualities of patience and respecting boundaries. Even when younger or appearing as puppies, Golden Retrievers are intelligent, gentle and naturally affectionate.
Golden Retrievers are definitely considered to be one of the brightest dogs around! They are highly trainable and are often praised for their intelligence. They possess great problem-solving abilities, and are adept at understanding commands and responding to cues. For instance, they can be taught tricks and have the capacity to learn very quickly. Not only do they have impressive cognitive skills, they are generally known to be affectionate and loyal, too. Those qualities combined make for an incredibly smart and lovable pup.
