Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are an intelligent breed within the sporting group of dogs. They are energetic and eager to learn, making them a great pet and an eager student during obedience classes. They have a thick coat that is usually a golden hue, hence their name, and is moderate to long in length. They do best on a moderate diet, as they do require daily exercise, and some must constantly be reminded to not gain too much weight. They are known for their gentle and friendly nature, making them an excellent family companion.
Golden Retrievers, as most dog breeds, shed to some degree, however they are generally considered to have a low-shedding coat. As a result, the traditional grooming requirements for the Golden Retriever are lower than for other breeds. Goldens tend to have a dense, water-repellant double coat which helps protect against inclement weather. With the proper diet, brushing, and grooming the shedding can be managed to a manageable level, however you should not expect a Golden Retriever to be a non-shedding breed.
Golden Retrievers typically do not have special dietary needs beyond what is normally expected for most dogs. That said, Golden Retrievers can have different nutritional requirements depending on their life stage, amount of exercise they receive, and any health concerns they may have. It is important to consult with a veterinarian about your Golden Retriever's individual dietary needs and follow their specific instructions. In general, Golden Retrievers should be fed a nutritionally balanced diet that meets all their needs for protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water.
One of the best ways to become an experienced puppy parent before bringing home your new Golden Retriever is to read up on caring for dogs. Familiarizing yourself with the lifestyle and habits of different breeds, their exercise needs, nutritional and environmental requirements, common health concerns, and their daily needs will prepare you for the responsibility of owning a Golden Retriever. Additionally, research different tips for training your new pup so you are prepared to start the process when they arrive.
Golden Retrievers are considered medium-to-large-sized dogs, rather than small-sized dogs. They are classified as a large breed of dog and typically mature between 21.5 to 24 inches tall and 50 to 75 pounds in weight. They can vary in size, however. Some Golden Retrievers may be smaller in size, but they should not be considered a true small breed. Consider considering too that the life span, energy level and general need for affection and exercise can be more demanding in larger and medium-sized dogs than in small dogs.
It is recommended that Golden Retrievers get at least 30 to 60 minutes of exercise each day. Depending on the age and activity level of your pup, the amount of time devoted to physical activity can vary significantly. Generally, an hour is a good amount of time for a daily walk, however, if your Golden Retriever requires more exercise, then you should plan for additional walking and playtime. In addition to your daily walks, you may also consider activities such as fetch, jogging, swimming, agility training, and fetching games to help keep your pup healthy and active.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers tend to be incredibly patient, kind and gentle around children of all ages, making them an excellent choice for families with young ones. These playful pups can provide hours of cuddles and fun playtime, and their friendly nature and loyalty make them one of the best dog breeds out there to be around children, as they are patient, understanding and willing to accept whatever comes their way. Golden Retrievers also learn quickly and, when bored, can turn to destructive behaviors like chewing and digging. Therefore, ensuring they have plenty of toys and mental stimulation is key.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are renowned for their intelligence, as the American Kennel Club suggests that they are “Active, Intelligent and Devoted”, making them one of the most popular and sought-after breeds in America. Their intelligence and problem-solving skills make them easy to train and they are often used as guide dogs, search and rescue dogs, as well as being ideal family pets. Thus, they are considered an incredibly smart dog and can quickly learn complicated commands and work well with a variety of people.
