Golden Retrievers are classified as a sporting group dog. They were bred to have a gentle mouth allowing them to retrieve waterfowl during hunting and agility. This kind of breed is also classified as active and has a strong need to work in some capacity. Known for being intelligent and loyal, Golden Retrievers are very trainable and make excellent family pets. Their cheerful disposition makes them very pleasing companions. These dogs are well-mannered with strangers and, with proper socialization, typically gets along with other animals.
The Golden Retriever coat is thick, glossy, and slightly wavy and can come in different shades of gold, ranging from cream to a rich red-gold. It is water-repellent, which helps keep them warm and dry when they take a dip in the water. They also have a dense undercoat that helps keep them warm in cooler climates. While the coat does not like to mat or tangle, it will still need regular brushing to keep it healthy and clean. The amount of training needed for a Golden Retriever each day depends on several factors, such as the age, breed and temperament of the individual dog. Generally speaking, it is recommended that you spend at least 10 minutes a day teaching basic obedience commands and reinforcing good behaviors. Of course, if you desire a more advanced level of training or want to train your pet to perform specific tasks, then you may need to invest more time, up to 45 minutes per day. And don't forget to also set aside a few minutes for playtime and to bond with your pup each day.
