Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds and have been ranked third among 138 breeds tested in obedience and working intelligence. Their friendly, loyal nature and remarkable trainability have given them a well-deserved reputation for being excellent family pets. It is believed they were developed in Scotland during the mid-19th century and used as gun dogs for retrieving downed game. Golden Retrievers are known for enjoying almost any activity that involves playing with their human family, playing in water, or chasing a Frisbee or ball.
No, Golden Retrievers are not hypoallergenic. People who suffer from allergies need to be aware that Golden Retrievers do have a fairly heavy coat and will shed a considerable amount of fur and dander. This could trigger an allergy because these particles are made up of proteins from the dog's skin, saliva, urine, and dander. In addition, while Golden Retrievers are generally quite healthy, certain health problems, such as diabetes or poor joint health, can occur, and may trigger an allergic reaction in people predisposed to these allergies.
It is important to know what not to feed Golden Retrievers to ensure they stay healthy and thrive. Your best bet is to determine what specific nutritional needs each breed has. Generally, you should avoid feeding them foods with artificial coloring, additives, and preservatives, as these can be harmful to their digestive systems. Additionally, human food such as popcorn, candy, and sweets should not be given to animals. Other items to avoid include coffee and chocolate, as well as grapes, raisins, and other fruits with pits that can easily become lodged in an animal's throat.
Preparing for a new Golden Retriever requires dedication, time, and patience. First, you should look into puppy classes and socialization classes to ensure your pup is well-socialized and properly trained. Second, obtain all necessary supplies such as food and water bowls, a comfortable bed, collar and leash, toys, crates, and treats. Third, research various health requirements, such as yearly checkups, vaccinations, and flea and tick prevention; make sure to get your pup fixed if necessary.
Golden Retrievers are generally classified as medium-sized dogs, as they typically weigh between 55 and 75 pounds. While they are certainly a good deal larger than many small dog breeds, such as Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus and Toy Poodles, they are still slightly smaller than some of the larger breeds such as Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds. Ultimately, most experts agree that a Golden Retriever's size makes it somewhere between a small and large breed.
It is recommended for a Golden Retriever to walk or exercise for at least an hour a day. This time should be divided into multiple walks because a single long walk can be tiring for the dog – taking several shorter walks throughout the day can be of more benefit to your pet. As a general rule of thumb, each walk should last around 20 minutes, with a mix of aerobic walks like jogging or running as well as slower paced strolling exercises. In addition to keeping your Golden Retriever healthy, walking will also provide mental stimulation and help reduce their risk of developing behavioral issues.
Golden Retrievers are excellent family pets that are known for being loyal and loving companions. They are especially well suited for households with kids since they are incredibly patient and gentle with all members of the family, young and old. Not only are Golden Retrievers well-behaved, they are also very intelligent and easily trained making them perfect canine companions for children of all ages. In addition, they are outgoing and love to be part of the action so they are a great choice for active families. All in all, Golden Retrievers make ideal playmates and loyal companions for children.
Training a Golden Retriever can be quite easy or difficult depending on the individual dog and the amount of effort put into the process. Generally, Golden Retrievers are eager to please and have a high intelligence level, so with the right motivation and consistency they can quickly pick up on commands and learn fundamental behaviors. With very little experience, one can develops a strong bond with their pup and strengthen a trusting relationship. That said, it is important to keep Golden Retrievers mentally and physically active in order to maintain their enthusiasm for learning and prevent them from becoming distracted or bored.
