Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid dog breed created from an affectionate mix of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. These canines are relatively new to the breed world having first been introduced in the mid-1990's. Goldendoodles offer the best of both breed worlds, combining the sweet nature of a Golden Retriever with the intelligence of a Poodle. These dogs require a moderate level of grooming, typically needing to be brushed several times a week to maintain their coats. Goldendoodles thrive on companionship and attention, making them ideal family pets.
Goldendoodles have coats that are typically soft and wavy. Their coat colouring can range from cream, gold, black, apricot, red, silver, chocolate and parti-color. They usually have a lightweight, low-shedding coat that has characteristics of both Poodles and Golden Retrievers. Their coat may have a slight curl or wave and is often combined with a downy undercoat. Depending on their lineage, the coat may be a bit thicker and not as wavy but should still have some degree of wave or curl.
Goldendoodles have different dietary requirements than other breeds, so deciding which dog food is the best for them depends on their individual needs. To determine the best option, consider any allergies, age, size, activity level and other health concerns of your dog. Highly-nutritious, premium dog food formulas specifically tailored to Goldendoodles are a good place to start. Look for diet options with high-quality ingredients such as real meats and complex carbohydrates.
Becoming a great puppy parent while waiting for your Goldendoodle is an achievable goal! Researching all your puppy's needs is a great starting point—create a checklist of essential puppy supplies, find your local veterinarian and consider enrolling in a puppy training program. Bonding with your pup starts as soon as you bring them home, so make sure to set aside plenty of quality time for cuddles, playing games, and training. To help with the transition, gather items such as your pup's favorite blanket, toys, or treats to have on hand for when they arrive.
Goldendoodles typically grow between 20-90 pounds depending on the size and mix of their parent breeds. They have a larger size variation than other breeds, ranging from very small Toy Goldendoodles, to large Standard Goldendoodles, and anything in between. Generally, the smaller size Goldendoodle is about 15-20 pounds, Medium is 25-50 pounds, and the larger sizes range between 60-85 pounds.
Goldendoodles are an active breed of dog, so they need regular exercise to stay healthy and well-behaved. The exact amount of exercise needed for any specific Goldendoodle can vary according to their age, size, and athletic capabilities, but most experts recommend that Goldendoodles get at least one hour of exercise per day split into two to three sessions. This might include taking them on a walk or engaging them in a good game of fetch. In addition to physical exercise, Goldendoodles also benefit from mental stimulation such as interactive toys or playing hide and seek.
Goldendoodles are an excellent choice when it comes to choosing a family pet. These smart and friendly dogs are highly intelligent, so they can learn commands and tricks quickly. They have a happy and affectionate nature, which allows them to easily bond and connect with people and other pets. Goldendoodles have moderate energy levels and don't require a lot of exercise, so they are a great fit for homes with families of varying activity levels. They also have a low-shedding coat, so they are ideal for those who have allergies to pet dander.
Goldendoodles need a substantial amount of exercise and mental stimulation daily. The amount of time you should spend training your Goldendoodle will depend on their age, size, and activity level. As an average guideline, puppies usually need around 30 minutes of exercise, plus 10-15 minutes of formal training per day, while adult Goldendoodles may require up to an hour of exercise and 20 minutes of formal training. Regardless of the time you devote to training, it's important to break it up into short sessions throughout the day, with plenty of short breaks in between for positive reinforcement.
