Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed; they are a mix of the golden retriever and the poodle. While the poodle is considered a 'non-sporting' breed in most classifications, goldendoodle's are usually placed in the sporting or working group. Goldendoodles have become increasingly popular family pets in recent years due to their intelligence along with their outgoing and lovable demeanor.
Generally speaking, Goldendoodles have less of an inclination to cause allergies than other breeds. While individual reactions may vary, the Goldendoodle breed is highly sought after for their low-shedding, allergy-friendly coats. It's still possible to be allergic to pet dander, regardless of the breed, and it's important to do an allergy test to determine if you would react. Taking good care of a Goldendoodle properly, including regular bathing and grooming, can also be helpful in keeping allergies to a minimum.
Goldendoodles are a popular and relatively new breed of dog with certain dietary needs. The best dog food for Goldendoodles should contain natural, wholesome ingredients with balanced nutrition to provide optimal support for their energetic nature. Look for a food that is specifically formulated for medium-sized breeds, focusing on lean proteins with a range of vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients. Avoid ingredients, such as corn and wheat, that are common fillers that can upset a Goldendoodle’s digestive system.
Goldendoodles generally have the same requirements that any other breed of doodle would have; however, as a relatively new breed they do have a few additional considerations for their care. Firstly, their unique fusion of two different breeds brings increased attention to grooming with longer and denser coats than either the Golden Retriever or the Standard Poodle. Secondly, their alert and energetic nature means that they require ample exercise to stay healthy and balanced. Finally, their innate intelligence means they require consistent stimuli and training in order to stay mentally stimulated.
Goldendoodles vary in size depending on the size category (standard, medium, or miniature) and the generation of the crossbreed, but generally, these dogs are larger than toy or miniature poodles and smaller than golden retrievers. For a standard-sized Goldendoodle, you can expect a full-grown adult to reach anywhere from 45 to 70lbs, with a height of 22 to 25 inches.
Goldendoodles are active and energetic, and get plenty of exercise by running, playing, and walking. Generally speaking, Goldendoodles need at least an hour of physical activity every day, and more if possible. For young pups, shorter bursts of activity are best as they grow and develop. As they get older and become more physically active, they can build up to more sustained exercise. Goldendoodles, depending on their coat length, can also benefit from regular brushing, swimming, or other activities that keep them mentally stimulated.
Goldendoodles are generally excellent family dogs due to their sociality and intelligence. They are loyal, devoted, and gentle with children, but they also usually interact well with visitors. Goldendoodles also tend to be highly trainable and eager to please their owners, which makes them easy to live with. With the proper training, these dogs can also be reliable guardians and perfect playmates. Not only are they a great source of companionship and comfort, but they are also highly intelligent and can make excellent watchdogs.
The amount of time required to effectively train a Goldendoodle each day will vary depending on the activity you are working on and the age and experience level of your dog. For dogs that are new to obedience training, recommended training times can range from five minutes a day for younger puppies to longer periods depending on their age and level of ability. Even with an experienced dog, daily training sessions should not exceed 30 minutes, as longer training sessions will likely result in an overwhelmed and frustrated dog.
