Questions & Answers
A Goldendoodle is an incredibly popular hybrid breed of dog. It is the result of crossbreeding a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Goldendoodles usually weigh between 25-50 pounds and stand 18 to 24 inches tall. They have a curly, fluffy coat that is typically cream, gold, or red, and their coloring can be any combination of the three. Goldendoodles are typically very intelligent, loyal, and friendly.
The Goldendoodle coat is a combination of the Golden Retriever and Poodle. They typically have a soft, wavy, and wiry coat. The coat can also vary from being flat or more curly depending on which parent breed the Goldendoodle has inherited the coat from. Owners of Goldendoodles should be able to determine the coat type of the pup as they mature since Goldendoodles can have several different coat patterns.
Goldendoodles should not be fed anything that contains chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, xylitol, macadamia nuts, or onions. Keeping to a diet of healthy, species-appropriate human-grade food is best for any pup; you can read up on what nutrition experts recommend, talk to your veterinarian for advice, or even ask fellow Goldendoodle owners what works best for their pups. If ever in doubt, always err on the side of caution and do not feed your pup anything that hasn't been deemed safe by a trusted source.
Preparing your home for a new Goldendoodle requires a bit of work and planning. Make sure to get your home puppy-proofed, set up an area where your pup will sleep, have lots of chew toys handy, and create a consistent simple potty schedule. You'll also need to purchase all the correct food and nutrition, bedding, and grooming items such as brushes and even nail trimmers. For the safety of your new pup, it's important to check for any small objects that could be choking hazards, and tie up any dangling cords that are easy to tug on.
Goldendoodles vary in size, depending on whether they are a standard, medium, or miniature size. Standard Goldendoodles usually reach between 23–24 inches in height and weigh anywhere between 45-90 pounds. Medium Goldendoodles can reach 18-22 inches at the shoulder and usually weigh between 30-45 pounds. Miniature Goldendoodles usually grow to 11-17 inches and weigh between 15-35 pounds. All three sizes of Goldendoodles are considered small to medium-sized dogs, making them suitable for most households.
Goldendoodles often love to swim, as it is an activity that is both mentally and physically stimulating. They enjoy the cool water and the physical activity involved with swimming. Goldendoodles have a particularly strong sense of adventure and curiosity, so the chance to explore a new place with a different type of terrain is exciting for them. Additionally, many times owners will throw balls into swimming pools or lakes to play a game of fetch with their Goldendoodle. This further stimulates them and keeps them enjoying swimming time.
Goldendoodles are very popular family pets due to their affectionate and easy-going nature. They are especially great with kids since they are intelligent and eager to please, two important qualities that help them learn how to interact with and respond to children. They possess a sweet and gentle temperament, so they are great at providing kids with comforting companionship and affection. Goldendoodles also have lots of energy, which can be great for playing games with kids. All in all, Goldendoodles make wonderful four-legged friends for families with children of all ages.
Training a Goldendoodle will depend on the individual dog, just like any other breed. This highly intelligent breed is eager to please and generally easy to train; however, you still need patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement to ensure successful training. Goldendoodles respond best to reward-based methods – treats and verbal/physical praise – as opposed to averse methods such as punishment. Repetition is key, so breaking up training into short, frequent sessions with clear rewards for good behavior is ideal.
