Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed that is a combination of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. They are an intelligent breed that's friendly and sociable, making them a great family pet. They're known for being easy to train, energetic, and fairly easy to groom. Goldendoodles can come in different sizes, ranging from mini, medium, and standard. Since they have a mix of different breeds in them, their coat color and texture can vary quite a bit. They usually shed very little, however, which makes them a great choice for those with allergies.
Goldendoodles can vary greatly in terms of shedding, with some not shedding at all and some exhibiting moderate to heavy shedding. To get an accurate assessment of their non-shedding potential, examine the genetics of the parent breeds: Golden Retrievers and Poodles. Poodles tend to shed minimally while Golden Retrievers are known to shed quite a bit. Depending on the balance of genetics, a Goldendoodle can exhibit non-shedding traits, or they can be more like their Golden Retriever parent and shed relatively heavily.
Goldendoodles have different dietary needs depending on their energy level, age, size, and activity level. If your Goldendoodle is an active pup, their diet should include premium, high-quality proteins, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and digestible fiber. Look for food with real ingredients and avoid options with preservatives, fillers, and artificial additives. You should also consult your vet to ensure your pet is getting appropriate levels of vitamin D, E, B-complex vitamins, iron, calcium, antioxidants, linoleic acid, and fatty acids.
Before you bring a Goldendoodle home, there are several essential items you should purchase. Buy a crate with a soft mattress for the dog to sleep on, a collar and harness with ID and maybe even a leash, food and water bowl set, nail clippers, toothbrush and toothpaste, food and treats based on size, age, and breed, and a vacuum to help keep the house clean.
Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes, ranging from miniature to giant; the smallest may stand up to 14 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh around 10-15 pounds, while the largest may stand up to 24 inches tall and weigh 50 pounds or more. The most common sizes are medium and standard, with medium Goldendoodles standing around 17-20 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing around 40-50 pounds, and standard Goldendoodles reaching heights from 20-24 inches at the shoulder and weighing up to 70 pounds.
Goldendoodles are generally known to have an almost inborn affinity for water, so it's no surprise that they love to swim. They have an incredible ability to take to the water without any hesitation or fear, making them excellent and fast swimming companions. Most Goldendoodles are physically well suited for swimming, with their strong, muscular legs and broad, wide feet that act like oars helping them propel through the water. Swimming is great exercise and provides excellent mental stimulation for them.
Absolutely! Goldendoodles are excellent family dogs. They are loyal, friendly, and highly social which makes them great fits for households of all sizes. Goldendoodles are eager to please their owners and are typically easily trained. With their high intelligence, they make excellent companions and learn tricks quickly. Goldendoodles are also known for their low shedding, making them popular with those with allergies. Additionally, Goldendoodles generally get along well with other household pets, so they make great additions to families.
Training a Goldendoodle is easy if you commit to a consistent routine and stay patient. The best place to start is basic obedience commands such as Sit, Stay, Down, Come, and Heel. Constructing a predictable training pattern is key, as it creates reliability. Give your pup positive reinforcement by offering treats, verbal praise, or playful activities when they succeed in following commands. Gradually increase difficulty levels as the puppy progresses and give them breaks in between teaching each exercise to avoid frustration.
