Goldendoodles are fascinating because they have the best of both worlds: the intelligence of a Poodle and the loyalty of a Golden Retriever. Their intelligence means they can be easily trained and they tend to be low-shedding and allergy-friendly – which is great news for dog owners who don't have the time or energy for extensive grooming. They are naturally friendly, and because they love being around people, they make great family dogs or therapy pets. Their remarkable combination of traits also makes them suitable for a wide variety of activities, from agility and obedience competitions to therapy work.
Goldendoodles are often referred to as being low-shedding, however, this isn't entirely accurate. While these dogs do tend to shed less than a traditional Poodle or Golden Retriever, there is still some shedding to be expected. Goldendoodles have tight and curly coats that tend to trap hair, which can make it appear as though they aren't shedding at all. In reality, they will still shed some hair, but it will be spread out over time and not as noticeable.
Goldendoodles require a balanced diet heavily based around healthy meats, dairy, vegetables and fruits. As with any breed, there are certain unacceptable food items that should be avoided. Processed food, human junk food, sweets, diets with high grain content, raw fish, salty food, and food with added chemicals should be avoided in all circumstances. Grooming needs such as bathing, trimming and brushing should be done regularly to keep their coats shiny and looking great. Exercise is also important; not only does it promote physical health, but it helps develop helpful social skills. Depending on the breed, Goldendoodles may require walks, runs, swims, and playtime. Additionally, it is important to regularly check their teeth, ears, and eyes for any health problems.
Goldendoodles generally fall somewhere in the mid-sized range, depending on individual parent breeds. Therefore, they aren't considered truly small dogs, though many may fit within the smaller size categories. Generally, Goldendoodles can stand from 14-24 inches in height and weigh between 30-90 pounds, although size will vary depending on the parent breeds used in the crossbreeding. Furthermore, the type of coat a grown Goldendoodle may end up with will also affect the size.
Goldendoodles require a moderate amount of physical and mental exercise in order to stay healthy and happy. Generally speaking, a 20 30 min walk per day is enough for a Goldendoodle to stay physically fit. However, it's important to remember that this exercise needs to be done in addition to providing plenty of opportunities for play and mental stimulation. Activities that engage the senses and stimulate the mind, such as scent games, canine sports, and obedience training, are all valuable ways to keep a Goldendoodle entertained and mentally engaged.
