Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, making these pups an adorable and loving mix of the two breeds. Fun facts about them include that they can live 10-15 years on average, look the part of a teddy bear, and inherit some of the intelligence of both their parent breeds. Goldendoodles love being around people, especially children, and are also a very loyal breed that love to please their owners. They also have low to no shedding hair, making them ideal for homes with allergic people.
Goldendoodles come in a range of sizes and coats, and some may be non-shedding, depending on their genetics and coat type. Generally, the F1 Goldendoodles (50% Golden Retriever & 50% Poodle) have a loose, wavy coat that can shed seasonally. F1B Goldendoodles (25% Golden Retriever & 75% Poodle) usually have a tight, dense coat that is less prone to shedding, but can still shed minimally.
Goldendoodles are sensitive to certain foods, so it is important to do some research to make sure you know what not to feed them. Most experts recommend avoiding any foods that are high in fat or sugar, and avoiding human food altogether. To research what your Goldendoodle can and can’t eat, you can consult your vet for a list of recommended and disallowed foods, or check out online resources which also provide detailed lists.
Goldendoodles, like all breeds of dogs, have specific requirements for their care and wellbeing. Generally speaking, Goldendoodles require a good diet, plenty of exercise, frequent grooming, and regular visits to a qualified veterinarian. They need regular playtime and plenty of socialization in order to be properly adjusted to life around people and other dogs. A secure fenced in area is recommended to ensure the safety of the Goldendoodle. Training is also important for this highly intelligent breed.
Goldendoodles are considered small to medium-sized dogs, depending on the type of Goldendoodle in question. Generally, they reach a maximum of 20-40 lbs., so they do not fall into the 'large dog' category. F1 Goldendoodles (or first generation Goldendoodles) tend to be around the 'medium' size range when full grown and usually weigh in at 20-40 lbs.
Goldendoodles are endowed with a natural fondness for water, and this attribute is often a key factor in why people choose them as a companion. Generally, Goldendoodles love to take a dip in the pool, wade in a lake, or even swim in the ocean. They appreciate the freedom of movement and the aquatic environment. Even if not given formal training, most Goldendoodles enjoy the water and will often jump in with enthusiasm, followed by lots of tail wagging and whimpering from their joy and excitement.
Goldendoodles are generally friendly and intelligent, which makes them an exceptionally good fit for families with children. They are often cooperative and eager to please, both of which can be excellent qualities in any family pet. They are often loyal and willing to bond with their family members. Goldendoodles can be socialized at an early age to get along with children and also other pets. Given their intelligence, Goldendoodles can learn acceptable behavior quickly.
The amount of daily exercise Goldendoodles need depends on their particular age, size, and activity level. Puppies, for instance, will require more frequent and vigorous exercise than an adult Goldendoodle. Generally, it is recommended that Goldendoodles receive between 30-60 minutes of exercise per day, depending on the individual dog. To ensure optimal health, Goldendoodles should receive a combination of mental and physical stimulation, such as an activity like agility, a game of fetch, running, swimming, or even a long walk in the park.
