Questions & Answers
A Goldendoodle is a crossbreed dog created from a Golden Retriever and Poodle mix. It is a popular mixed breed because they are intelligent, friendly, and highly trainable. Because they are a hybrid, they maintain the ability to derive the best traits from both parent breeds: the hypoallergenic coat of a Poodle and the happy, gentle disposition of the Golden Retriever. Goldendoodles also come in a variety of sizes, ranging from miniature to standard-sized, and can be bred for a wide variation of coat colors and textures.
Goldendoodles are not hypoallergenic breeds, however, depending on the breeding and the parent breeds, some may be lower-shedding and therefore may cause less irritation to those with allergies. As Goldendoodles are a mix of a Poodle and a Golden Retriever, some can be more allergy-friendly than others. Both parent breeds have a certain amount of hypoallergenic tendencies so when bred together, and depending on the breeders, the puppies may have a low-shedding coat.
Goldendoodles are an intelligent breed that does well with proper nutrition and a variety of foods. Generally, they should be fed a diet consisting of high quality dry kibble, ideally one specifically designed for large-breed puppies, as this will help nourish their coat and maintain their energy level. If supplementing their diet with wet food, be aware that Goldendoodles may tend to gain weight quickly, so monitor their intake carefully.
Preparing for your new Goldendoodle involves making sure your home is ready and that you understand the needs of the breed. Before your pup arrives, consider things like puppy-proofing your home for safety, making a list of supplies you'll need and researching appropriate nutrition requirements. Once your pup is with you, they'll need a spot for their crate, supplies such as food, toys and treats, and consistent training for housebreaking and commands. Consider attending training classes and communicating with your veterinarian to ensure a healthy and happy companion for years to come.
Goldendoodles are a unique mixed breed that can vary greatly in size. Some may be considered small or even toy-sized, while others can be much more substantial and might be categorized as large-breed. Generally, these dogs may be classified as medium-sized but some can be on the larger side. For the most part, Goldendoodles tend to be larger than your typical lapdog breeds like Shih Tzus and Beagles, but smaller than newfies or other giant breeds such as Great Danes.
Goldendoodles are known for their love of water, making them the perfect water dog! They typically take to the water easily and thoroughly enjoy their time swimming, making them a great choice as a swimming companion. Goldendoodles can be trained to go underwater too, so they make excellent retrievers. As such, swimming proves great exercise for Goldendoodles since it engages their minds, bodies, and all of their senses.
Goldendoodles are highly valued family dogs because of their friendly and intelligent personalities. As a hybrid breed, they exhibit the desirable traits of both the Golden Retriever and Poodle with their gentle and loyal natures. Goldendoodles are the perfect option for families who want an energetic and affectionate pet that loves to play and be involved. They get along well with children, other dogs, and most people. Moreover, they are highly intelligent and easily trainable, so they can learn a variety of tasks.
Goldendoodles require consistent training and mental stimulation. How much training they need varies from dog to dog, but as a general guideline it is recommended that they receive up to 30 minutes of exercise per day and at least 15 minutes of training and mental stimulation. Training and mental stimulation, especially for puppies, can include activities such as puzzle games, lure coursing, agility and obedience exercises. Goldendoodles can benefit from even more training if you choose to enroll them in a more advanced class or activity.
