Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a distinct dog breed created by crossing a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. The resulting hybrid breed is quickly becoming one of the most popular companion animals among pet owners and families. Goldendoodles have a friendly and tolerant disposition, which makes them excellent service animals, therapy dogs, and pets. They are easy to train, hypoallergenic, and sociable, making them suitable for people with allergies. These hybrid canines are also friendly with other animals and children, making them great family dogs.
Goldendoodles generally are known to have a low to non-shedding coat, depending on their genetics and the type of coat they have. They're a hybrid of a Standard or Miniature Poodle and Golden Retriever, and as such, they tend to inherit some of the Poodle's hypoallergenic coat. Goldendoodles tend to have a combination of the Poodle's low to non-shedding coat and the Retriever's thick, glossy coat. This usually leads to a low-shedding hybrid breed that produces minimal to no hair.
The best way to determine what not to feed Goldendoodles is to consult a veterinarian. A vet can provide you with specific instructions as they are the experts and will know what food and nutrition is best for your dog's individual health. Furthermore, it's important to remember that Goldendoodles, like all dogs, can be allergic to certain ingredients. Therefore, reading labels and researching ingredients before feeding them is key. You should also watch out for human food, such as chocolate, which can be toxic for dogs.
To prepare your home for a Goldendoodle, begin by puppy-proofing the home. Remove any objects that may be hazardous or dangerous, secure and block access to areas such as stairs, and create a safe space for the pup with a comfy bed and plenty of toys. Regularly check the home for items your pup may be curious about and seek to chew. Additionally, considering your pup's diet and stock up on necessary items such as food bowls, pet-friendly food, treats, a healthy chew bone or two, and a brush or comb for brushing your pup.
Goldendoodles vary in size depending on the breed of the two parent dogs. Generally speaking, Goldendoodles are considered a medium-sized breed, however puppies may be small when first born and some Goldendoodles may be considered to be small dogs when fully grown. As it is a hybrid breed, the size of the Goldendoodle can be hard to predict until they are fully grown and their potential size will depend on the size of the two parent breeds.
Goldendoodles are usually big fans of swimming! This breed of dog is known for its energy, enthusiasm and love of water, making it the perfect companion for a day at the lake, beach or swimming pool. Goldendoodles generally enjoy learning how to swim and can be taught to do so with patience and the right training approach. They may take a bit longer to learn to swim than other breeds, as their curly coats can sometimes make swimming less efficient.
Goldendoodles can absolutely make amazing family dogs! They tend to be smart, loyal, and eager to please their owners perfect traits for a family pet. Goldendoodles are also very loving and affectionate; they love spending time with their people and can be great cuddle buddies. Not to mention, they're hypoallergenic and are low-shedding, making them an ideal choice for families with allergies. They can also learn to be well-behaved companions and can even learn tricks, making them an ideal companion for children.
The answer to this question depends on several factors, like the age of the Goldendoodle and whether the behaviors you are training are basic or more advanced. For puppies and young Goldendoodles, it's recommended to start with a few minutes of training a day for basic cues like sit, stay, and come. As the Goldendoodle matures, longer training sessions can be added, with a goal of 15-30 minutes twice a day. Advanced training for skills like agility and tricks may require an hour or so of practice each day.
