Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are classified as a hybrid, or designer, breed that is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Goldendoodles typically weigh between 45 and 80 pounds and stand between 13 and 24 inches at the shoulder. They typically have a thick but wavy coat that can be anywhere from cream to black in color. Goldendoodles are known for their playful, affectionate nature and their intelligence, which makes them easy to train. They are good family dogs and typically have good relationships with other pets.
Goldendoodles are not considered hypoallergenic. Goldendoodles can produce dander -a dead skin cells similar to humansand saliva, both of which are known to cause allergic reactions. However, it's important to note that the levels of dander and saliva produced by Goldendoodles is often much lower than that of other breeds. While a Goldendoodle may be better tolerated by those with allergies than other breeds, this cannot be guaranteed.
Your Goldendoodle's dietary needs depend significantly on their age, size, activity level, and general health. Generally, Goldendoodles need a diet that is low in carbohydrates and carbohydrates from whole grains such as oats, barley, or brown rice are best. At least 25-30% of the diet should consist of high-quality animal-based sources of protein such as chicken, beef, lamb, and fish. It is also important to ensure that your Goldendoodle is receiving fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals to help support their energy level, coat, and joint health.
Before getting a Goldendoodle, you should prepare by setting up essential items to best care for your furry new family member. Get a crate or carrier for transportation, a bed, toys, food and water dishes, a brush for regular grooming, and quality food. Additionally, an extra leash, collar with tags, and waste bags for walks should also be acquired. Training items such as clickers and treats can help with obedience training. Don't forget to register your pet with your local vet and get a wellness check so your new pup can start off on the right paw!
Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes, just like any other type of dog. The classic Goldendoodle size is medium-sized, typically ranging from 18 to 20 inches in height and 45-50 pounds in weight. However, they can also be found in toy-size, typically ranging from 12-14 inches in height and 15-17 pounds in weight; as well as giant size, typically ranging from 24-30 inches in height and 70-90 pounds in weight.
Everyone's Goldendoodle is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Generally, an hour of moderate walking or playtime per day is recommended for Goldendoodle's to remain healthy. If your Goldendoodle is a puppy, you may need to spread out the walking time to shorter, more frequent times during the day to reduce the stress of development on their joints. Older Goldendoodle's need more low-impact activities such as leisurely strolls, swimming, playing with other dogs, and scent games.
Goldendoodles are an excellent choice for young families, as they are naturally inclined to be incredibly gentle and affectionate. Goldendoodles do well with children of all ages and do not require an overly strenuous amount of exercise to maintain their upbeat attitude. They adapt well to their environment, so if exposed to children from an early age, they will naturally become accustomed to their presence and be more likely to play and engage with them. Goldendoodles are wonderfully clever and eager to please, which is why they can be so easily trained.
Training a Goldendoodle can be a rewarding experience, but it's important to keep in mind that patience is an important key to success. Start your training by establishing yourself as the leader of the pack, letting your Goldendoodle know who is in charge. Make sure your pup knows basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come', and reward them with treats for good behavior. Consistency is critical; if you give your pup mixed signals, you may end up confused and frustrated.
