Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid of two intelligent dog breeds, a golden retriever and a poodle. They are friendly, loyal, and highly trainable. Goldendoodles have a life expectancy of 10-15 years and can weigh up to 70 pounds. They are a low to non-shedding breed and make great family pets. An interesting fun fact about Goldendoodles is they are known to be excellent swimmers! Due to their hybrid nature, many Goldendoodles enjoy long walks and beach visits.
The Goldendoodle coat tends to be soft and wavy, but is highly variable depending on the lineage of the parents. It comes in different colors, textures, and lengths. Generally, a Goldendoodle's coat is thick and the curls are looser and wavier than the classic poodle look. The texture often feels like velvet and ranges from soft and silky, to more like sheep's wool. Your Goldendoodle's coat could be curly, wavy or straight, as the Goldendoodle has the perfect combination of the lab and poodle's grooming needs.
You should research the nutritional needs of Goldendoodles and contact your vet for specific dietary advice. It's important to understand that Goldendoodles are susceptible to certain types of food intolerances and allergies so it's best to consult your vet on what's recommended for your particular dog. Additionally, some human foods are toxic to dogs and should be avoided. Some of these foods include grapes, onions, raisins, chocolate, and any type of sweets. Always make sure that any treats and foods you offer your Goldendoodle are specifically made for dogs.
Before getting a Goldendoodle, it's essential to have the right supplies. Make sure to have food, a food and water bowl, a collar/harness and leash, a long-term crates or carriers, grooming items such as shampoo and conditioner, tick and flea control products, grooming tools to keep their coat looking great, toys, treats, and any special items recommended by your breeder/vet. Additionally, make sure to familiarize yourself with the breed's typical health issues to help ensure your pup has the best chance at a long, healthy life.
Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes, with the smallest ones weighing 10-15 pounds and the largest over 90 pounds. Depending on the mix of the parents, the Goldendoodle can fall anywhere in that range. Minis are typically in the 10-30 pound range, standards usually in the 30-50 pound range, and large breeds over 50 pounds.
Goldendoodles are a very active breed and require a good amount of exercise. It's important to give your Goldendoodle regular physical and mental stimulation in order to ensure their wellbeing and prevent them from becoming anxious or destructive. Depending on the specific age and health of your Goldendoodle, exercise requirements can vary, as an older Goldendoodle may not need as much exercise as they once did. Generally speaking, it is recommended that Goldendoodles receive at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, and it is best to break this time up into shorter, more frequent sessions.
Goldendoodles are an excellent choice for families as they have a great temperament. Known for being intelligent, friendly, and loyal, they form strong attachments with their owners and other family members quickly. Not only are they undisputedly cute, they often require less grooming than other dogs, and therefore make great house pets. Their gentle, pleasant nature gives them unusually high social compatibility with children and other animals, making them very easy to train and great for first time owners.
Training a Goldendoodle can take time and patience, but it is possible. Goldendoodles are an intelligent hybrid breed, making them relatively easy to train if the right methods are used. Positive reinforcement, consistency, and rewards can help encourage desired behaviors and help put your pup on the path to success. Creating a structured and familiar routine will also help your Doodle know what to expect and strengthen their understanding of the commands given. Providing them with plenty of exercise and playtime will help burn off excess energy and result in calmer behavior, necessary for successful training.
