Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed of dog. They are a mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, meaning that they share the best qualities of both, such as intelligence, friendliness, and a non-shedding coat. They are usually quite social and make wonderful family pets. Goldendoodles need plenty of exercise, training, and playtime with their families in order to prevent boredom and destructive behavior. Although they are loyal and loving, they can be sensitive and can become overwhelmed easily, so patience and consistency are important when interacting with them.
Goldendoodles have beautiful coats that are dense, soft, lush, and silky. They are usually a combination of Poodle hair and Golden Retriever fur, so the coat may display characteristics of both. The coat often straight or wavy and can range from mildly curly/frizzy to tightly curled. The puppies generally have a lighter coat color than the parents, but it usually darkens as they get older. With regards to maintenance, the Goldendoodle coat does require brushing and combing, to prevent knotting, entangling, and matting.
It is best to consult your Goldendoodle's veterinarian for advice on what not to feed them. Generally, it is best to avoid feeding Goldendoodles human food, as items such as chocolate, onions, grapes, and avocados can be harmful. Additionally, it is important to ensure that Goldendoodles are not overfed as this can lead to being overweight and developing related health issues. When selecting an appropriate diet for a Goldendoodle, look for high-quality ingredients, low amounts of salt and sugar, and a balance of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.
Becoming the best puppy parent while you're eagerly awaiting your new Goldendoodle starts with preparation. Make sure you have the necessary supplies before your new pup arrives, including food, chew toys, a bed, and a crate. Take time to research what to expect with owning a Goldendoodle and the different stages of puppy development. Set aside a designated space where your pup can stay, such as a designated room or kennel. Create a daily schedule and training plan to provide structure to your pup’s life.
Goldendoodles can range in size from small to large. Their sizes turn out to be dependent on the size of their parents and how many generations removed they are from the parent dogs. Generally, a standard Goldendoodle will weigh anywhere from 45-90 pounds and can grow up to 25 inches in height. Golden minis may range in height from 10-14 inches tall and may weigh 20-35 pounds. The healthiest sizes of Goldendoodles are between 30-45 pounds and stands from 18-23 inches at the shoulder.
Goldendoodles are a high energy breed and require a lot of exercise to stay healthy and mentally stimulated. Depending upon the age and size of your pup, guidelines generally suggest at least an hour of daily exercise, but this could vary significantly. Puppies up to 4 months old need about 10 to 20 minutes of activity each day, breaking up the time into a few short periods, while adult Goldendoodles will typically need at least an hour of moderate exercise, such as a brisk walk, a vigorous game of fetch, or an agility session.
Goldendoodles are incredibly popular and are a great choice for first-time owners. Their even temperaments, intelligence, and eagerness to please make them a wonderful canine companion. They are highly loyal and sociable, so have the potential to bond closely with all members of the family. They're also highly trainable, so even the most inexperienced owners will be able to teach basic commands and could also develop a unique bond with their Goldendoodle. As with any breed, it is important to consider the energy levels and exercise requirements before making your final decision.
Training your Goldendoodle is an important part of having a successful long-term relationship with your pet. The key to effective training is to be consistent and to reward desirable behaviors with rewards. When your Goldendoodle is exhibiting an undesirable behavior, it is important to stay calm and use positive reinforcement to prevent the behavior from continuing. Start teaching basic obedience commands like sit, stay, come, and stay. Then work on commands like "sit and stay" for extended periods of time. Set realistic expectations and be consistent with your reward system.
